Jane Fischer

MARSHALL–Mass of Christian Burial for Jane Fischer, 90, of Marshall, will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, February 28, 2025, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Marshall. Visitation will be Thursday from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. with a CCW Rosary at 5:00 p.m. at the Horvath Remembrance Center in Marshall. Visitation will continue on Friday from 8:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at the Remembrance Center. Interment will take place at St. Eloi Catholic Cemetery in Ghent.

Jane Ann (Canavan) Fischer was born on July 15, 1934, in Ft. Dodge, IA, to Joseph and Regina (Nugent) Canavan. She graduated from Corpus Christi Catholic High School in Ft. Dodge. Jane obtained Bachelor’s degree in English from St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN. She then obtained her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Minnesota. Jane taught school for a time in Emmetsburg, IA. In 1960, she married John Wallace “Wally” Fischer at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Ft. Dodge. The couple farmed and raised their family west of Marshall. After her children were grown, Jane taught in the English Department at Southwest Minnesota State University.

Jane appreciated the local arts community and was a season ticket holder at the Guthrie Theater. She enjoyed playing Bridge and belonged to several Bridge groups. She was proud of her Irish heritage and was an avid reader. Jane loved to travel and especially enjoyed being a Grandma.

Jane died unexpectedly at Heritage Pointe in Marshall on Monday, February 24, 2025. She is survived by her son William (and Bonna) Fischer and their two children Zach (and Jenna) and Sam; son John (and Mary) Fischer and their three children Thomas (and Ellie), Issac, and Claire. She is also survived by her deceased son Joseph’s children: Matthew (and Nikki), (their children Joey and Brom), William, Emmett, Thor, Sophia, and Cora, and Angela, her deceased son’s wife; in-laws Barb Kerr, Rita Giesler, Chuck Fischer and Rosemary (Don) Bot. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wally, son Joseph in 2005, daughter Mary in 2020, two infant sons, sister Mary Kay Canavan, in-laws William “Casper” Fischer, Robert “Buck” Fischer and Teresa Fischer, Duane Kerr, Carroll Giesler, and Bernice Fischer.
