Haley knew what she was talking about
To the editor:
It is amusing to see that growing up in different sections gives you a different view of history. As a native of the Pacific Northwest, we were taught the reason for the Civil War was the South planned to secede — leave the Union and start their own country. Their economy was good and they were seething over the taxes and tariffs that the northern states were forcing on them. They had enough. When the north won, they freed the slaves and completely destroyed the South and its economy. They never did recover.
The young woman in the Carolinas had it right.
