Look at key phrase in Constitution

To the editor:

President Trump signed an Executive Order ending “birthright citizenship”, based on the original intent of the 14th Amendment ratified in1868 in the aftermath of the Civil War.

“All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside.”

The words “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” is the key phrase. Meaning if a person comes from another country they remain subject to the country from which they came and therefore cannot obtain automatic citizenship when born on United States soil. It follows that when United States citizens, such as military, ambassadors, and their families that are deployed or stationed in other countries continue to maintain their United States citizenship. United States citizenship extends to their child when born in a foreign country.
