What makes America great?
To the editor:
The World Book Dictionary” lists thirteen possible definitions for the word “great”. The adjective can describe size, quantity, importance, or relationship to another person.
“Great” is also used to describe quality as in the hyphenated word, “great-hearted”. Do we want our country to be considered great because of its wealth and power or for its “noble, generous, brave, fearless” people? Which news stories warm our hearts the most? A report of how the stock market is doing or a daring rescue that saved a person or animal’s life?
A country is as strong and great as its people, I believe. Doing an honest day’s work, being a law-abiding citizen, ready to help others around the world, being loyal to family, friends and country, and being thankful to God for our blessings make us wealthy in spirit and are all things money can’t buy. We can pray, “Give us this day our daily bread.”
