On the Porch

The social news or gossip columns in the old newspapers are always fascinating to read. A special section in the newspaper was devoted to the social media of the day. The whereabouts of local people and events were often featured in these columns. Here are a few from The News Messenger of Lyon County on: Dec. 2, 1921:

Mrs. Ernest Hoffman returned Tuesday morning from Orlando, Fla., where she had been visiting her sister.

Mr. and Mrs. Roy Castle entertained the Robert Castle and Frank Jacobson families at dinner Thanksgiving day.

Mr. C.A. Tweet, who for the past six months has been manager of the Manhattan Oil Company’s filing station in this city, and Miss Isabelle Boudreau, a Green Valley young lady were united in marriage at the later place November 24.

The Misses Marjorie Neill, Marjorie Morgan, Mary Lynch, Evelyn Rydeen and Mae Regnier entertained at a dancing party at the Legion Hall last Friday night. The hall was beautifully decorated for the occasion. Light refreshments were served. Mrs. Ralph, Marvin Adler and Joe Bulowski furnished the music.

About one hundred and thirty couples enjoyed an evening of dancing and cards on Wednesday at the American Legion Halls, as the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Claude Hoagland, Mr. and Mrs. Frank White, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Whitney. Lerschen’s Orchestra furnished their usual splendid music and refreshments were served in the spacious and modern confectionery of the Curtis Brothers, in the same building. The hostesses adopted this plan of returning their social obligations, and on this Saturday noon are giving a luncheon at the home of Mrs. Roy Williams for ladies who were not at the dancing party. Among the out of town guests were Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dolan of Pipestone, and Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ruliffson and Mr. and Mrs. Don Ruliffson of Russell.

A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. L. Hammer on November 17th. The little girl has been named Elaine May.

The Marsh 5 to 25c Store opened for business last Saturday and the store was visited by large crowds of early Christmas shoppers throughout the day.

Miss Myrtle Thomas and Mr. John Wild, local young people were united in marriage November 23 at Sibley, Iowa.

The Lyon County National Bank have one of the first attractive Christmas windows for the season, introducing in an effective manner their Liberty Bell savings banks.

The photograph featured this week shows a Liberty Bell savings bank issued by the Lyon County National Bank. This savings bank along with a few others from other local banks are in the Lyon County Museum’s collection. The Lyon County National Bank was located in the building on the corner of 3rd and Main streets in Marshall where Nessa’s Naturals is located today.

The Lyon County Historical Society (LCHS) is a nonprofit, member-supported organization. LCHS operates the Lyon County Museum at 301 West Lyon Street in Marshall. The Lyon County Museum is open year-round to visitors.
