DEI Commission committed to cultivating diverse backgrounds

Marshall Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Commission was formed in early 2021 with the mission to create and sustain ongoing dialogue, through which we explore inequities, share information, and be a change agent for race equity within our community.

To support our work, we know our community is special:

• From 2010 to 2020, Lyon County percent of population who identified as either Hispanic or a race other than white went from 12% to 19%, City of Marshall 22%.

• Marshall’s median household income is $53,138 compared to $77,706 state-wide.

• 33 Languages spoken in Marshall Public Schools

As part of our commitment, the city of Marshall, through the DEI Commission, recently adopted a 2025-2030 Strategic Plan with the following focus areas:

• Internal Capacity, Processes, and Systems

• Relationship Building with Government Entities and Community

•Community-Engagement and Communication

We will continue to support our workforce and help our employers attract and retain employees from underrepresented demographics through awareness and community wide events. Our Commission also partners with our educational institutions, including Southwest State University (SMSU) and Marshall Area High School to promote diversity and inclusion as ways to support students for academic success. We also are a supporter and advocate of the city’s efforts in housing, transportation access, inclusive park and recreation facilities, like inclusive playgrounds.

While we know that our DEI work is just beginning, we are encouraged that others, including our largest employers, businesses, educational institutions and community organizations are encouraging our work.

The DEI Commission remains committed to cultivating our community’s diverse backgrounds where everyone feels valued, respected, and represented and we are grateful for the community’s support in our work.
