On the Porch

For this column, I often share social news or the gossip columns from the old newspapers. The social news is always fascinating to read and a lot can be learned of local people and events from the communities in Lyon County. For this article, I’m going to share the classifieds from one of the newspapers. The classifieds are interesting to read as well. Here are a few from the News-Messenger of Lyon County on April 5, 1918:

Must be seen to be appreciated. Call at once and look it over. M.T. Truman, Lock Box 224, Marshall, Minnesota.

The photograph featured this week from the Lyon County Museum’s collection is a postcard photograph featuring the City Park in Marshall. The City Park had been known as Whitney’s Grove. Later, the City Park was renamed to Liberty Park. House numbers in Marshall changed over time. There is no 315 Walnut Street today. If anyone has an idea what the house mentioned above is located at, please let me know.
