Minnesota is known as the land of 10,000 fishable lakes. The history of the resort business has been recounted in books such as Resorts of Minnesota by Neil Johnson with Adam Swenson and The Early Resorts of Minnesota by Ren Holland. These books trace the development of resorts in Minnesota along with some of the stories of early resorts and the memories families made while there.

One resort in southwest Minnesota, the Valhalla Resort, had a ballroom and a rollerdome. On Saturday, June 22 and Sunday, June 23 in 1968, the Valhalla Resort held a grand opening after a year-long $100,000 renovation. The grand opening featured a free beef barbecue from 5 p.m. until they ran out of meat on Saturday. That evening Jack Rene and his band from Nashville, Tenn., provided country western music with half off admission prices to the ballroom.

On Sunday night, the Tiny Little orchestra furnished the music. Roller skating prices for both days of the grand opening had been reduced to 60 cents. The resort manager, Bob Payton, said in the Tracy Headlight Herald’s June 20th edition that area people showed a great deal of interest in the beautiful new ballroom. He also mentioned in the newspaper article that the steakhouse was also remodeled along with the huge rollerdome.
