MARSHALL — The Marshall boys and girls golf team returned home on Friday afternoon to host New Ulm and Jackson County Central in a triangular at Marshall Golf Club. The boys team tied JCC for first place with a team score of 177, but won on the fifth score tiebreaker while New Ulm shot a 187. The girls team also tied for first place against New Ulm with team scores of 213 and won on the fifth score tiebreaker while JCC recorded an incomplete team score.

Boys

On the boys side, Marshall had five players place in the Top 10. Luke Ehlers earned medalist honors with a 2-over round of 38 while Evan Franson placed seventh with a 45 and Jayden Manthei and Grant Horvath tied for eighth with a 47. Joey Fossum shot a 49 to take 10th place while Sam Schwarz had a 50 to place 11th to round out their scores.

Marshall boys coach Kari Ehlers said a challenge early on in the season for them is trying to limit holes with high scores and working past them throughout the round.

“One of the key hurdles for us is getting over the big scoring holes,” coach Ehlers said. “We had a lot of doubles and working past one in a round is manageable, but having two, three or four of them makes it hard to salvage a good score.”

Coach Ehlers added playing on their home course had some advantages, especially with the windy conditions.

“Having home course advantage was key,” coach Ehlers said. “With it being really windy, holes such as 14-16 can be really tough but I think we had an advantage there on the other teams. We also made some really clutch shots; Jayden had an approach shot to five feet and drained the putt and Joey had to punch out his second shot from the trees, carved a 4-iron against the wind and then drained a 30-foot putt. When you end up in a tie, those types of shots make a big impact.”

Girls

On the girls side, Marshall was led by Brooklyn Gossen, who shot a 46 to earn medalist honors while Grace Ehlers shot a 53, Taylor Miller had a 55 and Eryn Kraft had a 59. Bella Philips shot a 63 and Mild Du had a 65 to round out their scores.

Marshall girls coach Megan Nickel said she was proud of the way her team competed and continued to battle throughout the round and against the conditions.

“I’m really happy with how the girls played with how the weather turned out. It just goes to show how every shot, chip, and putt counts. A tie after 213 strokes is unbelievable,” Nickel said. “It’s a good learning lesson for the girls to keep fighting during your round and don’t let one bad shot determine it.”

Marshall will compete next on Monday at home at 4:15 p.m.
