MARSHALL — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Mankato West 12-3 on Tuesday.

Marshall jumped out to a strong start, as Leah Schaefer found the back of the net on the assist by Tessa Gannott 3:36 into the game to make it 1-0 before Gannott scored on the assist by Kayta Waltz a few minutes later. Near the midway mark of the opening period, Marshall got on the board again, as Gannott found Schaefer for the second time before Mady Girard scored her first varsity goal on the assist by Gannott and Schaefer at the 14:55 mark of the frame. Schaefer then added a goal in the closing seconds of the first to complete the hat trick on the power play on the assist by Kalyn DeVlieger to make it 5-0 after one.

Mankato West would strike first in the opening minute of the second period, but Marshall quickly responded with a goal by Schaefer, her fourth of the game, on the assist by Mia Wichmann to make it 6-1 before Kendal Beernaert got one past the goaltender 18 seconds later to push the advantage to 7-1. The two sides would trade goals the rest of the frame, each scoring two. Regan Loft found the net on the assist by Olivia Penske nearly three minutes into the second, and after Mankato West scored back-to-back goals, Loft got her second of the evening in the final minute of the frame on the assist by Beernaert and Lily Verkinderen to make it 9-3 after two.

Marshall kept attacking on the offensive end in the third, as Girard got her second of the game 13 minutes into the frame on the assist by DeVlieger before Piper Mellenthin found the back of the net for her first varsity goal on the assist by Waltz and DeVlieger scored on the assist by Schaefer to bring it to the 12-3 final.

Marshall outshot Mankato West 28-14 on the game. Belle Deutz earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 11 saves.

Marshall (5-4-1) will face Fairmont at home on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
