HADLEY– The longball proved deadly for the Marshall A’s as they hit multiple home runs in a 16-5 victory over the Hadley Buttermakers on Saturday afternoon.
The A’s started off hot behind a two-run home run by Ryan Schwagel, putting the A’s up early in the contest.
Hadley would respond by scoring three runs in the first three innings and cutting the deficit to 4-3 after three.
Both teams had a scoreless fourth and fifth innings, but in the sixth Marshall center fielder Connor Neubeck blasted a three-run homerun over the wall in right field, extending the lead of the A’s to 7-3 after sixth
The Buttermakers wouldn’t go away easily.
In the bottom of the sixth, Derek Kluis was able to get a RBI groundout, giving Hadley their fourth run of the game. Brent Hokeness had a sacrifice fly to again pit the deficit at two runs.
It would be the last run scored by Hadley.
Neubeck added another RBI single hit in the seventh and Wesley Sarsland hit a solo home run scoring the two runs back that Marshall gave up for a 9-5 lead.
The Buttermakers would threaten again with two runners on in the bottom half of the seventh, but failed to move any runners, leaving them on base.
Then the 9th inning to forget about came for Hadley.
Errant throws, walks, dropped balls and key at bats spired the A’s into scoring seven runs in the inning. What once was a close game became a deficit that was too much for the Buttermakers to handle and ultimately fell 16-5.
Neubeck had four hits including a home run and drove in five RBIs in the victory. Peyton Grant had three hits, drew two walks and scored five runs in the contest. Wesley Sarsland also had two hits including a home run and drove in three RBIs.
Manager of the Marshall A’s Ryan Schwagel spoke on the team’s performance.
“Really impressed with the way Jake Eben controlled the game on the mound,” Schwagel said. “He did a good job of throwing strikes and forcing the hitters to put the ball in play. Offensively, we did a good job of showing patience at the plate but also being aggressive on pitches in the zone.”
The A’s had 14 hits in the ballgame and Schwagel also hit a home run in the win.
Evan Lenz led Hadley in hits with three and also drove in two runs as well. Hokeness had two hits and also drove in two runs in the loss.
Both teams will be in action today.
The Marshall A’s will host the Sacred Heart Saints and the Hadley Buttermakers will host the Milroy Irish.
Sunday game
MARSHALL– The Marshall A’s completed the weekend with a pair of victories over the Hadley Buttermakers and over the Sacred Heart Saints 4-1 on Sunday evening.
Grant had another three hit baseball game and scored two runs, giving him seven runs on the weekend. Seth Res ick had a sacrifice fly and also had a hit and drove in a game-high two runs. Hunter Wienhoff pitched a complete game and shut down the Saints holding them to one run and four hits in the victory.
Chase Douglas had the other hit in the ballgame and the A’s played terrific defense with a great outing from Wienhoff. Schwagel spoke on the team’s win.
“Wienhoff had another solid start,” Wienhoff said. “Just pounding the zone, keeping them off balance and using our defense. Offensively, Grant stayed hot with another three hits. Ultimately, it was our speed that won the game for us, guys putting themselves in scoring position with five total stolen bases today.”
Jack Howard led the Saints with two hits and drove in their only run in the contest.
With the win, Marshall improves to (9-4) and will host Granite Falls in their next game on Wednesday July, 12th.
