Vierstraete, Stelter come up big at the plate in 3-1 victory

MANKATO — JR Vierstraete and Andrew Stelter came up big at the plate to help the No. 2 Marshall 15U VFW Orange baseball team win its District 2 Tournament matchup against No. 7 New Ulm Gold 3-2.

Vierstraete was hit by a pitch in the first at-bat of the game. He stole his way to second and advanced to third on an error before Stelter drove him in with a ground ball to left field.

With the game tied in the bottom of the fourth inning, Stelter hit a leadoff triple and scored on Logan Phillippe’s sacrifice bunt, giving Marshall a 2-1 lead.

The Tigers got one last insurance run with one out in the bottom of the fifth when Vierstraete hit a home run to left field, putting Marshall up by the final margin of 3-1.

Chase Alcorn started on the mound for Marshall, pitching 5 2/3 innings and surrendering just one run on four hits and six walks. He also struck out three batters.

Eli Weedman closed out the remainder of the game to pick up the save. He allowed just one base runner, a walk, while striking out two of the five batters he faced.

New Ulm scored its lone run in the top of the third inning. New Ulm put a runner on with a walk and stole second to get in scoring position with two outs. The next batter doubled to right field to drive in the run and tie the game at 1-1 before a pop out to first base ended the inning.

Marshall (22-5-1) will face the winner of No. 3 New Ulm Silver and No. 6 Sleepy Eye in the second round of the winners’ bracket on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Mankato East High School.
