Sneller’s seven 3s lead YME past RRC

LAMBERTON — Bayli Sneller was red-hot from 3-point range in the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team’s season-opener on Friday. The junior guard knocked down seven shots from long range to lead the Sting to a 73-38 victory on the road.
Sneller finished the night with 31 points while Bailey Mortenson and Alana Almich added another 14 each.
Tia Donkersloot led RRC with 17 points in the loss while Maia Scheffler helped set up the Falcons’ leading scorer with six assists. Paige Wondercheck also had eight rebounds in the game.
Yellow Medicine East, now 1-0 on the season, will play the second of three consecutive home games on Tuesday when it hosts BOLD at 7:30 p.m.
Red Rock Central falls to 0-1 and will look to get in the win column when it hosts Murray County Central (0-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
CGB 65, Canby 58
CANBY — A heroic scoring outburst from Brynn Kockelman wasn’t enough to lead the Canby girls basketball team to a win on Friday night as the Lancers fell to Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley 65-58 in their season-opener.
Kockelman finished the night with 25 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field and 3 of 5 shooting from 3-point range. She also consistently got to the free throw line, where she shot 10 of 12.
Izabelle Hulzebos and Josie Frank each scored another 9 points for Canby. Hulzebos was the team’s rebounding leader with 10 boards while Ava Daneilson accounted for four of Canby’s nine offensive rebounds.
Kockelman led the team defensively with three steals and a block while Danielson and Audrey Hentges each added another block.
Canby falls to 0-1 with the loss and will look to bounce back when it hosts Hancock on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
GFW 52, MCC 47
WABASSO — Strong efforts on the offensive boards weren’t enough for the Murray County Central girls basketball team to pull out a win in its season-opener against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at the Wabasso Tip-off Classic on Friday afternoon, falling 52-47 against the Thunderbirds.
MCC finished the day with 19 of its 35 rebounds coming on the offensive glass. Leading the way, Kelli Miller and Suttyn Schryvers grabbed five and three offensive boards respectively while Ava Deacon secured a team-high eight total rebounds.
Deacon also finished as the team’s leading scorer, contributing 9 points and knocking down a pair of her five 3-point attempts. Taylor Larson also added 8 points while Miller and Thea Schneider chipped in 7 each.
On the defensive end, Deacon came away with four steals and a block while Schneider and Larson each stole the ball twice. Larson was also the team’s leading distributor with three assists.
Murray County Central falls to 0-1 with the loss and will look to bounce back when it takes on MACCRAY to close out the Wabasso Tip-Off Classic today at 10 a.m.
HLOF 50, Wabasso 33
WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team couldn’t pull out a win at home to start the season on Friday, falling 50-33 to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda to start its home Tip-Off Classic.
Aylah Jenniges led the team with 10 points on the night while Ava Samyn added another 6 in the loss. For HLOF, Renae Salentiny and Ashton Reiverson led the way with 15 and 13 points.
Wabasso will look to end its home tournament with a win when it takes on Westbrook-Walnut Grove (0-1) today at 12:30 p.m.
MACCRAY 47, WWG 33
WABASSO — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team couldn’t get its offense going in its season-opener on Friday night. Despite a big game from Leah Carter, the Chargers were limited to a 47-33 loss to MACCRAY to start the Wabasso Tip-Off Classic.
Carter had the hot hand in the first half, draining a pair of threes en route to a 14-point first half. She finished the night with a team-high 20 points, but was the only player to convert multiple field goals.
WWG falls to 0-1 with the loss and will look to bounce back when it takes on the hosting Wabasso Rabbits on day 2 of the tournament today at 12:30 p.m.
