Dawson-Boyd falls to Cherry in battle of Class A’s top teams

EDINA — In a battle of the top-two teams in Class A teams on Saturday, the top-ranked Cherry Tigers showed why they’re the reigning state champs, defeating No. 2 Dawson-Boyd 70-64.

Brayson Boike had another big game in the loss, scoring 25 points on 9 of 23 from the field and 3 of 7 from 3-point range. His eight rebounds were also a team high.

Drew Hjelmeland added another 14 points for Dawson-Boyd while Jaxton Hastad and Gunnar Liebl each chipped in another 10. Liebl and Hjelmeland each shot 5 of 10 from the field while Liebl shot 5 of 10.

Hjelmeland dished out four assists on the day while Carson Stratmoen blocked a pair of shots.

Isaiah Asuma and Noah Sundquist led Cherry with 20 and 19 points respectively while Noah Asuma and Carson Brown added another 14 and 15. Isaiah Asuma was particularly efficient, shooting 10 of 11 from the field.

Sundquist led the Tigers on the boards with nine rebounds in the game, including four offensive rebounds.

Dawson-Boyd 72, Ortonville 29

DAWSON — Drew Hjelmeland had an efficient scoring and passing night to lead the Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team to a 72-29 win over Ortonville on Monday.

Hjelmeland’s six assists tied Brayson Boike for a game-high, each turning the ball over once. Hjelmeland’s 22 points were also a game-high as he shot 9 of 14 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3-point range.

Boike and Carson Stratmoen added in another 15 and 14 points respectigvely. Boike shot 7 of 12 from the field while Stratmoen shot 5 of 6 from the field and a blazing-hot 4 of 5 from 3-point range.

Dawson-Boyd also won the rebounding battle 29-14, behind nine rebounds from Boike and seven from Hjelmeland. Boike and Hjelmeland each grabbed three offensive rebounds.

Hjelmeland was one of two Blackjacks with a block in the game, along with Jaxton Hastad. Hastad also tied Cade Solem for a game-high three steals.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 2-1 with the win and will go on the road to face Lac qui Parle Valley (1-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Minneota 79, YME 39

GRANITE FALLS — The Minneota boys basketball team picked up its first win of the year in dominant fashion on Monday, defeating Yellow Medicine East by a final score of 79-39 behind some precise 3-point shooting.

Tate Peterson was the Vikings’ offensive leader in the win, scoring 24 points on 8 of 12 shooting from the field and 7 of 10 shooting from 3-point range.

Easton Johnston and Adam Dalager also had the hot hand from 3, Johnston shooting 4 of 8 for 14 points and Dalager going 4 of 9 for 12 points. Lucas Rybinski also scored 11 points for Minneota.

For the Sting, Wakinyan Greycloud was the lone scorer in double figures, scoring 17 points on 7 of 17 from the field. Jacob Peterson was the only other Sting scorer to make more than two field goals, going 3 of 8 for 7 points.

GreyCloud filled the stat sheet in the win, recording five steals, five rebounds and a block. Eric Jimenez also recorded six rebounds and three steals.

Rybinski and Hunter Cartsensen led MInneota on the boards with nine rebounds each while Kyson Arndt and Leo Hennen each finished with another six. Arndt was one of two Vikings with a block in the game, along with Johnston.

Minneota improves to 1-1 with the win while YME falls to 1-2. The Vikings will host Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (1-1) for their home opener on Friday at 8 p.m. as part of a weekend tournament while YME will host Renville County West (1-0) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

WWG 61, Mankato Loyola 57

WESTBROOK — Hudson Jenniges’ double-double paved the way for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team to take down Mankato Loyola by a score of 61-57 for its first win of the season on Saturday.

Jenniges scored a game-high 24 points with 10 rebounds in the win. He also dished out four assists.

Drew Swanson added another 13 points while Jackson Jenniges grabbed eight rebounds.

WWG improves to 1-1 with the win and will look to get above .500 when it hosts Southwest Minnesota Christian (1-1) tonight at 7:15 p.m.
