Marshall girls hockey remains undefeated with 2-1 win in Fargo

Marshall 2, East Grand Forks 1 

FARGO — The Marshall girls hockey team held on in another close matchup to preserve its undefeated 15-0-1 season with a 2-1 win over East Grand Forks in the Winter Classic Tournament in Fargo, N.D., Friday afternoon. 

Peyton DeMuth and Brooklyn Mauch scored the two Tiger goals, and Lily Stelter finished with 27 saves in the net. 

Marshall overall had 35 shots on goal, while East Grand Forks had 27. 

EGF first got on board with just over a minute to go in the first period, and had only three total shots on goal attempts to the Tigers’ 11 going into the first intermission. 

But, Mauch took matters into her own hands unassisted just under four minutes into the second period to tie the game up 1-1.

The game remained tied until Mauch found DeMuth with six minutes of game play to go in the third period to put Marshall up 2-1, and held EGF off the rest of the way. 

Marshall will look to remain perfect as it takes on Fargo North-South today in the second day of the tournament at 10 a.m.

Boys hockey

West Fargo 9, Marshall 3 

FARGO — The Marshall boys hockey team couldn’t find its stride and fell to West Fargo 9-3 Friday afternoon at the Winter Classic Tournament in Fargo, N.D. Jacob Johnson scored all three of the Tigers’ goals. 

West Fargo outperformed Marshall 40-15 on shots on goal, and went 4-1 in both the first and second period. 

Johnson’s first goal came at the 10:11 mark in the first period assisted by Owne Renslow, to tie the game up 1-1. But, West Fargo scored three goals all within a minute to close the period. 

Johnson’s second goal in the second period was unassisted, and his hat trick was finished with a feed from Brenden Weller in the final period. 

Nathan Lenz finished with a .775 save percentage in the net. 

Marshall (4-8) will next face River Lakes today in the second day of the tournament at 1 p.m. in Fargo.
