Chandler’s 1st-place finish highlights Tigers’ 2nd-place performance at Redwood River Riot
REDWOOD FALLS — Brayden Chandler was the Marshall boys wrestling team’s top-finisher on at this weekend’s Redwood River Riot. The sophomore earned a first-place finish in the 160-pound division for the Tigers, earning his team 29.5 points as Marshall went on to finish as the runner-up in the 34-team event.
Marshall finished with 168.5 points at the tournament, putting them behind only Holdingford’s 201.5. New Ulm Area rounded out the podium with 140.5 points.
In Chandler’s run to an individual title, he faced his toughest challenge in the first round. His match against MAHACA’s Andrew Marty went past the third period after finishing tied, but Chandler pulled out a 5-2 sudden victory.
From there, Chandler won by technical fall over Rocori’s Sawyer Minnerath (15-0, 3:41), won by fall over Fairmont/Martin County West’s Maddex Faber and Fulda/Murray County Central’s Quintin Lewis, and defeated Canby’s Sam Drietz 12-11 in a narrow championship battle.
Lincoln Christenson was an individual runner-up in 121, earning the Tigers another 24.5 points. After receiving a first-round bye, he defeated New Ulm’s Braydon Miller by fall and Holdingford’s Noah Perowitz by technical fall.
Christenson continued his strong run with a 10-1 major decision over Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United’s Gavin Mortenson but fell via 7-2 decision to Edina’s Anthony Nichols in the first-place match.
Gavin Schaefer earned a third-place finish for Marshall in 215 to fittingly earn his team 21.5 points. He started his run with awin by technical fall over Sauk Rapids-Rice’s Chris Smith (17-2, 5:51) before claiming consecutive pins over Canby’s Bryant Hansen and New Ulm’s Jamisen Frederickson.
Holdingford’s Kolton Harren knocked Schaefer out of title contention with a 4-0 decision in the semifinals, but Schaefer finished strong with a 6-1 decision over Sartell-Saint Stephen’s Peyton Allen in the consolation semi and a narrow 8-5 sudden victory over Dassel-Cokato/Litchfield’s OJ Winston in the third-place match.
Aidan Mattison, Landon Marthaler and Keynan Coequyt each placed fourth in 189, 121 and 114 respectively. Coequyt earned 19 points for his performance, Marthaler earned 17.5 and Mattison earned 21.5.
Tyson Louwagie and Drew Chandler placed fifth and sixth in 145 and 152, earning 18 and 13 points for the team.
After taking some time off for the holidays, Marshall will next compete in a quadrangular at Canby High School. The meet will also feature BOLD and Adrian-Ellsworth, and is slated to start at 5 p.m.
