Stensrud’s 25 points, 12 rebounds propel Lakers past Montevideo

Lakeview 52, Montevideo 47
COTTONWOOD — Brynn Stensrud carried the offensive load for the Lakeview girls basketball team on Tuesday night as the Lakers took down Montevideo 52-47.
Stensrud scored a game-high 25 points on efficient shooting, going 8 of 13 form the field, 4 of 6 from 3-point range and a perfect 5 of 5 from the free-throw line. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to finish the night with a double-double.
Anah Schmidt also recorded a double-double for the Lakers. Her 12 total rebounds, four offensive rebounds and four steals were each game-highs, and her 10 points on 3 of 12 shooting made her Lakeview’s second-leading scorer.
Schmidt, Carmen Varpness and Megan Schwartz each blocked a shot in the game.
Lakeview improves to 5-2 with the win and will look to earn its third straight victory when it goes on the road to Grantie Falls to do battle with Yellow Medicine East (4-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Minneota 56, Redwood Valley 51
REDWOOD FALLS — The Minneota girls basketball team bounced back nicely from its first loss of the season on Thursday with a win over Redwood Valley on Tuesday. Jaylyn Coequyt finished as Minneota’s leading scorer as the Vikings defeated the Cardinals 56-51.
Coequyt scored a game-high 21 points on 9 of 30 shooting from the field. She also grabbed a game-high 14 total rebounds and eight offensive rebounds, leading the Vikings to a 50-29 rebounding advantage overall and an 8-5 advantage on the offensive glass.
In addition to Coequyt, Eden Meagher scored 10 points while Kiersyn Hulzebos chipped in another 9, including 6 of 8 shooting from the charity stripe. Hulzebos’ three assists also tied Libby Sussner for a game-high.
On the boards, Meagher tied Claire Rost as the Vikings’ second-leading rebounder with nine boards. Hulzebos added in another eight.
On the defensive end, Rost snatched four steals while Hulzebos recorded another three. Sussner also came away with a pair of steals and logged the lone Minneota block of the game.
Minneota improves to 5-1 after handing Redwood Valley its first loss of the season, and will look to stay hot when it goes on the road to take on Canby (4-3) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The Lancers carry a four-game win streak into the matchup after a rocky start to the season.
Dawson-Boyd 65, Benson 54
BENSON — Aliva Estling put up a dominant rebounding effort for the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team on Tuesday night, recording a double-double as Dawson-Boyd defeated Benson 65-54.
Estling led the Blackjacks on the glass with 18 total rebounds and seven offensive boards, propelling Dawson-Boyd to a 43-33 rebounding advantage overall and a 15-9 advantage on the offensive glass.
Alyssa Swedzinski’s 19 points in the game were a team-high, shy only of Benson’s Kaida Helgenset’s 28. Estling added another 14 points for Dawson-Boyd while Claire Stratmoen contributed another 11.
Laura Schreier dished out four assists in the game while Swedzinski added another three. Lindsey Lund also grabbed seven rebounds to finish second on the team.
Dawson-Boyd improves to 2-5 with the win and will next host MACCRAY (4-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Edgerton 63, MCC 58
EDGERTON — The Murray County Central girls basketball team couldn’t hold onto its halftime lead against Edgerton on Tuesday, fading late in the second half before falling 63-58.
MCC held a 39-26 lead at halftime before Edgerton surged ahead.
Ava Deacon led the Rebels in scoring, finishing with 16 points on 5 of 15 shooting from the field and 2 of 6 shooting from 3-point range. Kelli Miller and Thea Schneider also contributed 13 and 9 points on the second night of a back-to-back, coming off a 56-41 win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Monday.
Deacon was also the Rebels’ leading rebounder on the night, finishing with seven boards.
MCC falls to 3-5 with the loss and will look to get back on track when it hosts Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (2-5) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
WWG 55, RRC 30
WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team put together a well-rounded scoring effort on Tuesday night to take down Red Rock Central by a score of 55-30.
Leah Carter led the Chargers with 20 points in the game while Riley Parker and Natalie Wahl added 14 and 13 respectively.
For the Falcons, Paige Wondercheck led the way with 10 points while Tia Donkersloot added another 8.
WWG improves to 6-2 with the win and will look to carry its momentum into a Friday night road matchup against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (4-3) at 7:30 p.m. in Tyler.
Red Rock Central falls to 0-10 on the season and will look to work its way into the win column when it hosts Edgerton (4-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
SWMC 73, RTR 66
EDGERTON — Addisyn Serryn, Laken Baartman and Paisley Thooft’s balanced scoring efforts weren’t enough to put the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team over the top in its 73-66 loss to Southwest Minnesota Christian on Tuesday night.
Serryn, Baartman and Thooft each scored 13 points in the game while Makayla Hesse added another 9. Serryn and Baartman knocked down three 3-pointers each, on three attempts for Serryn and four for Baartman. Baartman also went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line.
Avery Schreurs dished out a team-high four assists in the loss while Ava Karbo led the Knights on the glass with 11 rebounds. Dilyn Werkman added another seven rebounds while Serryn led the team defensively with four steals.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton falls to 4-3 with the loss and will look to end its three-game skid when it hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove (6-2) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Canby 65, Benson 24
CANBY — Ava Danielson’s double-double helped lead the Canby girls basketball team extend its win streak to four games on Monday. The Lancers led Benson by 20 points by halftime and coasted to a 65-24 win.
Danielson’s 12 total rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds, were a game-high and her 10 points tied Izabelle Hulzebos for second on the team.
Brynn Kockelman carried the scoring load with 20 points on the night, nearly outscoring Benson singlehandedly. She shot 7 of 16 from the field and 5 of 9 from 3-point range on the night.
Addison driessen also made two of her five attempts from beyond the arc for the Lancers.
Danielson’s three assists were a game-high and her two steals tied her with Kockelman, Ella Thovson, Rachel Jelen and Emily Nelson for a team-high.
Canby (4-3) will host Minneota (4-1) for its next game on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
RCW 58, RRC 45
RENVILLE — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team couldn’t end its season-opening schnide on Monday night, falling 5-45 to Renville County West for its eighth consecutive loss to start the season.
The defeat came on the heels of a 62-42 loss to Madelia on Saturday. Tia Donkersloot had 17 rebounds and 8 points in the loss while Kendra Schroeder led the team’s scorers with 15 points.
In Monday’s game, Maia Scheffler led the Falcons with 15 points while Paige Wondercheck added another 12. Scheffler also dished out five assists and came away with three steals in the game, while Wondercheck grabbed six rebounds.
BLHS 58, Wabasso 30
HECTOR — A strong effort showing on the boards wasn’t enough to get the Wabasso girls basketball team its first win on Monday night, falling to Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 58-30.
Wabasso built a 40-29 rebounding advantage in the game, including a 22-11 edge on the offensive glass. Elizabeth Morin led the way with six offensive rebounds and seven total rebounds, and Alexa Remiger grabbed another five offensive rebounds.
Morin led the Rabbits’ scoring efforts as well with 7 points on 12 attempts while Leah Mathiowetz added another 6 points on 3 of 4 shooting.
