TMB guts out OT win over SESM

SLEEPY EYE — After a nearly disastrous second-half collapse, the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team found its rhythm again in the overtime period of its game against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Saturday in day 2 of the Sleepy Eye tournament. The Panthers outscored the Knights 5-4 in overtime to claim the 77-76 victory.
TMB led 46-28 at halftime, but the Knights’ offense surged after the break to tie the game back up at the end of regulation at 72 points apiece.
Trevor Smith was the driving force of the Panthers’ offense, scoring a game-high 39 points on 13 of 28 shooting from the field and 5 of 10 shooting from 3-point range. He was also a perfect 8 of 8 from the charity stripe while the team as a whole shot 12 of 15.
Also a major offensive force was Alex Munson, who scored 28 points on 11 of 24 shooting from the field and 3 of 11 from 3-point range. His seven assists were also a game-high. He turned the ball over three times.
TMB built up a 42-37 rebounding advantage, including an 11-10 advantage on the offensive glass. Munson’s 16 total rebounds and four offensive rebounds were both team-highs while Smith added another 10 boards.
On the defensive end, Smith accounted for four of TMB’s 10 steals, helping the Panthers to a 10-13 advantage in the turnover battle.
Ryker Davis also recorded four assists and six rebounds in the win for TMB.
The Panthers improve to 2-0 with the win and will now go on the road to face Adrian-Ellsworth (0-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Sleepy Eye 66, MCC 56
SLEEPY EYE — An efficient scoring output from Gavin Gillette wasn’t enough to put the Murray County Central boys basketball on top in its road matchup against Sleepy Eye in the Sleepy Eye Tournament on Saturday. The Indians dominated the glass by a margin of 44-31, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive boards, to pull out a 66-56 win over the Rebels.
Gillette led the Rebels with 19 points on the night, trailing only Sleepy Eye’s Landon Wendinger’s 31. Gillette shot 8 of 16 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3-point range. His four steals also helped MCC claim a narrow 16-17 advantage in the turnover battle and his four assists were a game-high.
Hudson Schryvers was the only other Rebel to crack double figures and the only other Rebel with multiple 3-pointers, finishing with 10 points on 2 of 5 shooting from long range.
Aidan Swenson and Dylan Kluis each grabbed six rebounds to pace MCC while Gillette contributed another five, including four of MCC’s nine offensive rebounds.
MCC 93, Canby 48
CANBY — After suffering its first loss of the season on Saturday, the Murray County Central boys basketball team put together a balanced scoring effort on Monday to bounce back with a decisive 93-48 road win over Canby.
Aidan Swenson led a group of four Rebels in double figures, scoring 15 points on 7 of 10 shooting in the game. Hudsen Schryvers, Dylan Kluis and Gavin Gillette also contributed 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Maxwell Miller and Cayden Veldhuisen were the Rebels’ primary floor spacers on the day, Miller shooting 3 of 5 from 3-point range for 9 points and Veldhuisen shooting 2 of 5 for 8 points.
As a team, MCC knocked down 43% of its 3-pointers (13 of 30) while Canby shot 28% (7 of 25).
Cayden Anderson led Canby scorers with 15 points in the game.
MCC finished the night with a 38-34 rebounding advantage, including a 12-3 mark on the offensive glass. Swenson grabbed four offensive boards and seven total rebounds.
Schryvers and Gillette nabbed four and three steals respectively, propelling MCC to a 6-21 turnover advantage, while Kluis and Carter Hansen each dished out five steals in the game.
Murray County Central improves to 2-1 with the win and will next host Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda for its home opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Canby drops to 0-1 and will look to bounce back on the road at Edgerton (0-0) today at 7:15 p.m.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Springfield 71, RRC 24
LAMBERTON — Well-rounded efforts from Maia Scheffler and Tia Donkersloot weren’t enough to get the Red Rock Central girls basketball team its first win of the season on Saturday as the Falcons fell 71-24 to Springfield.
Tia Donkersloot led the team in scoring with 7 points and tied Scheffler with a game-high seven rebounds. Scheffler also scored 5 points in the game and posted game-highs with four assists and two steals.
Red Rock Central falls to 0-3 with the loss and will look to find the win column when it hosts Adrian-Ellsworth (1-1) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
KMS 82, DB 33
DAWSON — Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg’s offense was unstoppable on Monday night as the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team fell in an 82-33 drubbing.
Claire Stratmoen and Alyssa Swedzinski led the Blackjack scorers with 10 and 9 points respectively. Swedzinski shot 3 of 11 on the day while Stratmoen shot 4 of 17. As a team, the Blackjacks shot 26% from the field and 54% from the line but made each of their two 3-point attempts (one from Stratmoen, another from Kylar Hjelmeland).
Swedzinski led DB on the glass with eight total rebounds while Stratmoen’s three offensive boards were a team-high. Still, KMS maintained a 34-19 rebounding advantage on the day.
Dawson-Boyd falls to 0-3 and will look to bounce back on the road against Ortonville (0-1) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
