Canby’s Kockelman lights it up from 3 in Lancers’ win over E/H

ELKTON, S.D. — Brynn Kockelman went off for an efficient 25 points on Saturday afternoon, leading the Canby girls basketball team to a lopsided 63-31 victory over Estelline/Hendricks (S.D.).
Kockelman shot 9 of 11 from the field in the game and a blazing hot 6 of 7 from beyond the arc. Her four assists were also a team-best with one turnover, and she logged three steals on the defensive end.
Ava Danielson also finished in double figures for Canby with 12 points on 5 of 11 shooting, as well as a team-leading four steals on the defensive end, while Addison Driessen added another 6 points after knocking down both of her attempts from beyond the arc.
Saturday’s win brings Canby back above .500 on the season at 10-9. The Lancers will try to keep their head above water when they host Yellow Medicine East (8-10) tonight at 7:15 p.m. When the teams last met, YME pulled out a 57-42 win.
Dawson-Boyd 55, HLOF 54
DAWSON — Lindsey Lund led a group of three Blackjack scorers in double figures on Monday night as the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team edged past Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda by a single point, 55-54.
Lund scored a game-high 18 points on 5 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc. Alivia Estling and Claire Stratmoen also contributed 10 and 13 points respectively, with Stratmoen shooting 3 of 6 from long range.
Laura Schreier led the Blackjacks defensively with six steals while Stratmoen and Alyssa Swedzinski each snagged another two.
Kylar Hjelmeland and Stratmoen each tallied five rebounds in the game.
Dawson-Boyd improves to 5-13 with the win, ending an eight-game skid, and looks to build on the win when it hosts undefeated Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg (19-0) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
No. 10 Hancock 74,
Lakeview 57
COTTONWOOD — A spectacular scoring performance from Anah Schmidt wasn’t enough to put the Lakeview girls basketball team past No. 10 Hancock on Monday night. Despite Schmidt’s game-high 26 points, the Lakers fell 74-57 to the Owls.
Schmidt shot 10 of 17 from the field and 6 of 8 from the free-throw line to earn her points. Her five rebounds also tied her with Megan Schwartz for a team-high and she was the lone Laker to record a block on the day.
Brynn Stensrud was also a significant offensive contributor for the Lakers, scoring 18 points on 7 of 20 shooting. Stensrud’s three assists were shy only of Aubreigh Rausch’s four.
Schwartz was the only other Laker to convert multiple field goals, finishing with 4 points.
Brook Gunlogson made a defensive impact with four steals in the loss. She also dished out a pair of assists.
Lakeview (12-6) will have an opportunity to recover nicely from the loss with each of its next four opponents currently under .500 on the season. The Lakers next host Renville County West (5-12) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
Arlington (S.D.) 55, Minneota 49
ELKTON, S.D. — The Minneota girls basketball team’s defensive efforts weren’t enough to keep down Arlington (S.D.) on Saturday as the Vikings fell 55-49.
Claire Rost and Libby Sussner led a well-balanced offensive attack for Minneota with 10 points each while Jaylyn Coequyt and Kiersyn Hulzebos each contributed another 9 points. Coequyt also dished out three assists with one turnover and grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds on the night.
On the offensive glass, Minneota held a 12-11 edge behind four offensive boards from Coequyt.
Rost and Sarah Gruenes each snagged a pair of steals for Minneota while Coequyt and Meagher each blocked a shot.
Minneota falls to 11-8 with the loss and will look to avoid its third straight defeat when it hosts Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (3-13) on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
No. 3 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 81,

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team couldn’t get into a rhythm against No. 3 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Monday night, falling into an early hole and never recovering in the 81-45 loss.
RTR falls below .500 at 9-10 with the loss and will look to even up its record when it hosts Southwest Minnesota Christian (11-7) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
MCC 61, Wabasso 34
WABASSO — Calleigh Doeden recorded a double-double for the Murray County Central girls basketball team on Monday night, leading the Rebels to a wire-to-wire 61-34 win over Wabasso.
Doeden’s 15 points on 7 of 11 shooting were a team-high, as were her 11 total rebounds. Doeden’s five offensive rebounds also tied Kat Miller for a team-high as Miller grabbed nine total rebounds in the game.
Ava Deacon also scored 11 points for MCC while Thea Schneider and Miller added 8 each and Kate Blankenship and Taylor Larson each chipped in another 7.
Elizabeth Morin was the Rabbits’ leading scorer with 11 points on 4 of 10 shooting. Her eight rebounds were also a team-high, just ahead of Sara Carlson’s seven.
On the defensive end, Anistasia Smith logged four blocks for Wabasso while Ava Samyn and Aylah Jenniges each contributed another three. Jenniges also had a steal for the Rabbits.
Schneider blocked a pair of shots for MCC while Larson blocked one. Miller also had five steals for the Rebels while Deacon and Blankenship added three each.
MCC improves to 7-11 with the win while Wabasso falls to 1-20. The Rebels will look to pick up their third win in four games when they go on the road to face Windom (15-4) tonight at 7:30 p.m. Wabasso, meanwhile, looks to end its six-game skid when it hosts No. 3 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (17-0) at the same time.
