Kockelman’s 23-point night paces Lancers over Knights

Canby 58, RTR 43

CANBY — Brynn Kockelman exploded for 23 of the Canby girls’ basketball team’s 58 points on Tuesday night to lead the Lancers past Russell-Tyler-Ruthton for a 58-43 victory.

Kockelman shot 7 of 14 from the field but was particularly potent from 3-point range. The junior guard shot 6 of 9 from beyond the arc while the team as a whole shot 11 of 22.

In addition to Kockelman, Ava Danielson and Josie Frank each scored 8 points for Canby while Rachel Jelen knocked down two of her three attempts for 7 points.

Makayla Hesse led the Knights with 15 points on the day, connecting on three of her four attempts from beyond the arc, while Brezlyn Buchert added another 7 points for RTR.

Avery Schreurs led RTR on the glass with seven rebounds, including five on the offensive glass, while Adalia Matzner added another six. For Canby, Kockelman and Danielson led the team with seven and six respectively.

Kockelman’s four assists were a game-high while Schreurs and Ava Guida each logged three for RTR.

Danielson finished with three steals for Canby while Kockelman had two steals and a block.

For the Knights, Schreurs also had a trio of steals.

Canby’s victory puts the Lancers back above .500 on the season at 8-7 while RTR remains below water at 6-8. The Lancers will host Central Minnesota Christian (12-2) for their next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Russell-Tyler-Ruthton will host Murray County Central (5-9) at the same time.

GFW 67, Wabasso 36

WINTHROP — Anistasia Smith’s near-double-double wasn’t enough to put the Wabasso girls basketball team on top Tuesday night as the Rabbits fell 67-36 to Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop.

Smith scored a team-high 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Her seven rebounds trailed only Ava Samyn’s eight. 

Five of Samyn’s eight rebounds came on the offensive glass, where Wabasso grabbed 12 boards as a team.

Smith and Elizabeth Morin each blocked a pair of shots for Wabasso.

In addition to Smith, Samyn and Peyton Jenniges each scored five points.

Wabasso falls to 1-14 with the loss, which came on the heels of its first win of the season over Red Rock Central on Monday night. The Rabbits will look to regain some of Monday’s momentum when they head to New Ulm to take on Minnesota Valley Lutheran (7-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Pipestone 68, MCC 49

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central girls basketball team’s offense fell into a lull midway through the first half of its game against Pipestone Area on Tuesday and never recovered. After leading in the game’s early minutes, the Rebels fell behind 31-16 at halftime and never recovered in the 68-49 loss.

Taylor Larson led the Rebels offensively with 16 points on 6 of 13 shooting with four 3-pointers. Calleigh Doeden and Ava Deacon also scored another 11 on 4 of 11 and 4 of 13 shooting respectively.

Jadyn Kor carried the offensive load for Pipestone, finishing with 32 points on 13 of 22 shooting from the field and 4 of 9 shooting from beyond the arc.

Doeden led MCC’s rebounding efforts with seven boards while Kat Miller and Thea Schneider each grabbed another five.

Deacon recorded a pair of steals in the loss.

MCC falls to 5-9 with the loss and will next take on Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (6-8) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
