Marshall’s win streak ends vs. Brandon Valley

Brandon Valley (S.D.) 65, Marshall 60

BRANDON, S.D. — The No. 10 Marshall boys basketball team’s eight-game win streak came to an end on Tuesday night when it went on the road to take on South Dakota Class AA No. 2 Brandon Valley. The Tigers led 33-32 at halftime but couldn’t hold off the Lynx down the stretch, falling 65-60.

Cooper Mensink finished as the Tigers’ leading scorer with 18 points 5 of 13 shooting with three 3-pointers. Jayden Meister also added another 13 points on 5 of 8 shooting while Alex Franson chipped in 7 points on 3 of 11 from the field.

Landon Dulaney led the Lynx with 19 points on 9 of 12 shooting, Briggs Knutson added another 14 on 4 of 6 shooting from 3-point range, and Mach Mayen and Brayden Miller recorded 12 and 9 points respectively.

Brandon Valley outrebounded Marshall 27-23, though the Tigers held an 11-8 edge on the offensive glass. Mensink’s three offensive and five total rebounds were both team-highs.

On the defensive end, Meister logged a team-best four steals while JR Vierstraete and Oliver Voigt each contributed a block and a steal.

Marshall falls to 14-4 with the loss and will look to get back into the win column when it goes on the road to face undefeated Class AA No. 2 Waseca (19-0) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Waseca defeated Marshall 71-52 when the teams last met on Jan. 4.

Dawson-Boyd 68, Morris 52

DAWSON — Brayson Boike posted a team-highs for points, rebounds and steals to lead the Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team to a 68-52 win over Morris Area on Tuesday night.

Boike scored 17 points for the Blackjacks shooting 7 of 14 from the field, and grabbed 13 rebounds to earn the double-double. He also blocked three shots and logged another three assists.

Drew Hjelmeland also was one rebound away from a double-double, tying Gunner Liebl as the team’s second-leading scorer with 14 points and grabbing nine rebounds. His four offensive rebounds were a game-high, his five assists with two trunovers tied Liebl’s five assists with five turnovers for the most on the team, and he also blocked a pair of shots.

Carson Stratmoen tied Liebl with three steals and scored 11 points.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 13-3 with the win and hosts Lakeview (8-9) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in search of its fourth consecutive victory.

BOLD 72, YME 41 

GRANITE FALLS — The Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team fell to BOLD 72-41 Tuesday night and fought a 24-point halftime deficit. 

Jacob Peterson led the Sting with 19 points, and Gunnar Fagen followed with 9. Cooper McCosh had a team-high seven rebounds. 

YME shot 35% from the field, going 17 for 48, and shot 3 of 13 from the perimeter. 

The Sting (2-16) will next look ahead and look to get back on track when it travels to Lac qui Parle Valley on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. tip off. 

Wabasso 58, Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 54

SLEEPY EYE — Brayden Guetter scored a game-high 22 points with seven rebounds to propel the Wabasso boys basketball team to a narrow 58-54 win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s on Tuesday night. The Blackjacks held a 4-point lead at the break and played Sleepy Eye even from there, with each team scoring 29 second-half points.

Guetter shot 9 of 21 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers. Calvin Hanna also scored 10 points while Tavyn Larson added another 9 for the Rabbits.

Caden Frericks grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Wabasso along with three steals on the defensive end. Guetter also had a block and a pair of steals.

Wabasso improves to 11-7 with the win and hosts New Ulm Cathedral (6-11) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

HBC 81, MCC 47

SLAYTON — Some hot shooting from Max Miller wasn’t enough for the Murray County Central boys basketball team to stage the upset against No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek on Tuesday night. Miller scored a team-high 21 points on 7 of 12 shooting from beyond the arc, but a lack of scoring depth and defensive struggles in the interior saw the Rebels fall 81-47.

In addition to Miller, Aidan Swenson scored 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting from the field and Hudson Schryvers contributed another 6 points. No other Rebel scored more than 2 points and the rest of the team aside from Miller shot 0 of 6 from 3-point range.

HBC only attempted eight 3-pointers, making three of them, but dominated inside. HBC shot 59% from the field to MCC’s 41%, including 52% on 2-point attempts.

Swenson grabbed 10 rebounds for the Rebels while Gavin Gillette dished out five assists.

MCC drops to 11-6 on the year and will next play on Friday when it visits Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (2-14).

RRC 64, HLOF 53 

LAMBERTON — Henry Stavnes finished with 27 points and seven rebounds to lead the Red Rock Central boys basketball team past Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda 64-53 Tuesday night, ending an eight-game losing streak. 

RRC went into halftime with an 8-point edge, and was able to hold off HLOF the rest of the night. 

Abe Stavnes followed Henry with 17 points, while Austim Imker tallied another 11. 

RRC (3-15) will look to keep its momentum going when it hits the road to take on No. 10 Hills-Beaver Creek (16-1) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. 

SWMC 83, WWG 50

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Minneota 65, TMB 50 

MINNEOTA — Three Vikings scored in double digits to lead the Minneota girls basketball team past Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 65-50 Tuesday night. Jaylyn Coequyt led all players with 23 points and nine rebounds. 

TMB shot well from the perimeter, going 7 for 16, compared to Minneota’s trio of 3-pointers, however, they were outshot in the field. 

Minneota went 44% from the field, and the Panthers shot 33%. 

Minneota also forced 25 TMB turnovers, 14 of which came from steals. 

Along with Coequyt, Kiersyn Hulzebos finished with 13 points, while Eden Meagher followed with 12 points and a game-high five steals. 

For the Panthers, Melaina Ankrum and Gretchen Lanoue each led with 12 points apiece. Katelyn Ruppert finished with a team-high six boards. 

Minneota improves to 12-8 on the season, and will next travel to Pipestone (9-8) on Thursday at 6 p.m. 

TMB (3-14) will next look for a win when it returns home to host Lakeview (13-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m. 

Canby 64, YME 53 

CANBY — Both teams were tied at halftime, but it was the Canby girls basketball team that prevailed for a 64-53 win over Yellow Medicine East Tuesday night behind four players scoring in double digits. 

Brynn Kockelman led the Lancers with 18 points behind four 3-pointers. Addison Driessen followed with 11 points, while Josie Frank and Ava Danielson each tallied 10. Ella Thovson led the way with nine rebounds. 

The score was locked up at 27 at the break. Canby collected six steals on the night and 16 assists to help pass the Sting and solidify the win. 

The game also saw 10 lead changes and eight ties. 

Canby (11-9) will look for its third straight win when it travels to take on Renville County West (5-13) on Friday at 7:15 p.m. 

YME (8-11) will look to snap a four-game skid when it hosts Lakeview (13-6) on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Windom 88, MCC 50 

WINDOM — The Murray County Central girls basketball team suffered an 88-50 loss to Windom Tuesday evening. 

Taylor Larson led the Rebels with 11 points behind a team-high trio of 3-pointers. Ava Deacon followed with 10 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. 

MCC only trailed by 11 points at the half, however were outshot 45-18 throughout the second. 

The Rebels committed 28 total turnovers, compared to Windom’s 11. They were also limited to just 27% field goal shooting and went 12 for 22 from the free throw line. 

Windom shot 43% from the field and made 9 of 18 from the strip. 

MCC (7-12) will look to get back in the win column when it returns home to host Edgerton (10-9) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. 

No. 3 SESM 83, Wabasso 22

SLEEPY EYE — Offense was hard to come by for the Wabasso girls basketball team on Tuesday night when it took on No. 3 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. The Rabbits felldown 65-5 at the half and never recovered, losing by a final score of 83-22.

Elizabeth Morin grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot for the Rabbits in the loss while Aylah Jenniges scored a team-high 5 points.

As a team, Wabasso shot 7 of 30 from the field and 3 of 13 from beyond the arc. They also turned it over 41 times with three assists.

Wabasso falls to 1-21 on the season and aims to end its seven-game skid when it hosts New Ulm Cathedral (2-16) on Saturday at 6 p.m.
