MARSHALL — Brooklyn Mauch and Peyton DeMuth combined for 9 points as the No. 8 Marshall girls hockey team shut out Worthington 13-0 Tuesday evening at Red Baron Arena in a Big South Conference game. Mauch finished with four goals and an assist, while DeMuth had three assists along with a goal.

“The girls played really well. We wanted to come out and jump in,” Marshall assistant coach Chris Foley said. “I wouldn’t say we have been scoring goals, not as much as we had been earlier, so it felt really good for everybody to get some pucks in the back of the net.”

Eighth-grader Nora Holmgren also scored her first varsity goal in the final period of the night.

Following a first period in which the Tigers scored four goals to separate themselves early on, a majority of the night was spent in the Trojans’ attacking zone. The game was put away with a six-goal second period, and Marshall had a total 47 shots on goal while limiting Worthington to five.

“I think the shot attempts really go to show how strong our defense was tonight,” senior Olivia Degroot said. “Our offense definitely shined, but our defense is just as strong, I would say. Honestly, we’re just strong all around — Goalies, defense, forwards, everyone.”

Along with Mauch, Abbey Foley also had a pair of goals along with an assist. Aubree Metheny followed DeMuth with two assists.

Lily Stelter protected the net in the first two periods, saving all four shots on goal attempts. Haylee Kirchner got some time in the net as well for the entire third period, and also saved the single shot attempt.

“Getting Haylee in the net, Lily Stelter is actually the one who came over and asked [head] coach Cassie [Weiss] if we should put Haylee in for the third period,” coach Foley said. “Everyone in that locker room wants everyone else to succeed.”

The Tigers made it a point to set the tone early and scored three goals in the first seven minutes of the game. The first came from Mauch just 42 seconds in as she skated up the rink unassisted. It also was the night’s first shot on goal attempt.

Mauch is continuing her standout season, as she also recently surpassed 60 points in a single season for the first time on Jan. 2 in a 5-1 win over Fairmont. She also had a hat trick and assist. She now stands at 66 points.

Worthington played solid defense through the beginning half of the first period, keeping Marshall out of the offensive zone for longer periods of time.

But, the Trojans struggled to get any offensive movement going while Marshall returned the defensive favor. Worthington only had two shots on goal in the first period to the Tigers’ 15.

“I think that we got in our groove again. We had a bit of a lull there, and I think this was a game where we just needed to dominate,” Degroot said. “We went out there and dominated, got back in our groove, and we hope to keep it going.”

After Mauch’s first goal, play was stagnant until Brielle Felton Krog stole the puck away from Worthington’s defense who was trying to push it out of its territory, and netted it in seamlessly at the seven-minute mark.

Elsie Deutz didn’t wait long as she got her own rebound after a shot attempt and scored a goal just three minutes later, quickly followed by an Eme DeMuth goal. DeMuth nailed the puck in off a Kendal Beernaert feed as the two closed in near the crease 2-on-1 with the Trojans’ goalie.

All four of Marshall’s first-period goals were scored on even strength.

Coming out of the first intermission, both teams were held scoreless for nearly eight minutes, until Marshall heated back up and netted another five goals in the span of three minutes, and never slowed down. The game from there lived in Worthington’s attacking zone.

The Tigers kept Worthington silent throughout the second period, only allowing two shots on goal while Marshall hit 21.

“Once we get in a groove, you really can’t stop us,” Degroot said. “We just keep going and going, and we do not let up.”

Mauch scored a pair of goals back-to-back to secure her hat trick, both of which came in the 11th minute and were assisted by Peyton DeMuth.

Foley got the period started when DeMuth found Foley ahead of her, who went to take the goalie 1-on-1.

About 30 seconds later, the goal-sounding horn continued to ring as Peyton DeMuth found herself in position to score a goal. Beernaert and Foley scored the final two goals of the period, assisted by Metheny and Mauch respectively.

All six goals were again scored on even strength.

The final period was scoreless until Holmgren scored her first varsity goal with just over two minutes to go.

“The support group in the locker room, all these girls want everyone in that locker room to succeed,” coach Foley said. “I think that’s the beauty of it. When someone like Nora scores, everybody just loves it.”

Nearly immediately after, Elsie Deutz netted one in herself after stick-handling the puck and sent it to the back net 1-on-1 in the crease.

Mauch finished the night off with one more goal assisted by Foley in the final 30 seconds.

There were no Marshall penalties assessed, and Worthington had just two minors for hooking and tripping in the second and third periods.

Worthington drops to 3-9 overall and 1-6-2 in conference.

Marshall (17-1-1, 8-0-1 BSC) remains as the top contender in the Big South, currently leading the conference over Minnesota River (13-2-1, 7-0-1 BSC), though Minnesota River has a game in hand.

“It feels really good to be a part of this team. This is definitely one of the [most fun] years that I’ve had playing hockey,” Degroot said. “This group of girls is truly special. We’re having a good time this year.”

The Tigers have a week off from game play before they embark on a three-game road trip, starting at Fairmont on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. They will next return to the Red Baron Arena for its final regular season home game on Jan. 24 with a 7 p.m. puck drop when they host South Central (6-10-0).

“We really won’t stray from our philosophy too much,” coach Foley said. “Just go out and get that first goal, get your feet moving.”

Starting at $4.38/week.
