Mortenson’s 29 points lead YME past Wabasso

WABASSO — Bailey Mortenson exploded for a game-high 29 points for the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team on Tuesday night as the Sting doubled up Wabasso for a 74-36 victory.
Mortenson shot an ultra-efficient 14 of 16 from the field while also leading her team with 11 rebounds. Her two blocks trailed only Abigale Bones’ four and Alana Almich’s three.
Almich added in another 22 points on 10 of 21 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers.
Ella Cherveny and Klaira Shackelford set up their teammates well, logging seven and six assists respectively. They also tied Bayli Sneller with a team-high three steals.
Audrey Johnson was Wabasso’s leading scorer with 10 points while Aylah Jenniges and Ava Samyn each contributed another 7 points.
Yellow Medicine East (6-6) will host the winless Ortonville Trojans (0-13) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. while Wabasso (0-13) will aim for its first win when it takes on Cedar Mountain (9-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
RTR 72, HLOF 34
TYLER — Dilyn Werkman put together a solid effort on both ends of the court to set the tone for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team’s 72-34 win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda on Tuesday night.
On the defensive end, Werkman came up with four steals to tie Laken Baartman for a team-high. On the offensive end, she contributed eight points on 3 of 4 shooting from the field while knocking down both of her free-throw attempts. Her three assists also tied Makayla Hesse for a team-high.
Also contributing on the scoreboard, Brezlyn Buchert and Hesse scored a team-high 10 points each while Ava Guida and Paisley Thooft each added another 9. Adalia Matzner also converted each of her three attempts from the field and each of her two free throws for 8 points.
Buchert grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds in the win.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (6-6) has the opportunity to get above .500 when it takes on Hills-Beaver Creek (8-4) in a road matchup on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd 66, TMB 55
DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team picked up its third straight win Tuesday night with a 66-55 victory over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. The Panthers have now dropped eight straight games.
For the Blackjacks, Alivia Estling scored a team-high 22 points along with six rebounds. Lindsey Lund followed with 14 points and three steals, while Claire Stratmoen tallied another 11 points, also with three steals and five boards.
For TMB, Melaina Ankrum and Raelynn Schreier finished with 14 and 13 points respectively, while Ankrum also had a team-best 10 rebounds to complete her double-double performance.
Overall, Dawson-Boyd was able to pull away behind a 41% field goal shooting percentage and 42% from the 3-point line, while TMB also shot 41% from the field but just 25% at the 3.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-8) will aim to get back on track when it hosts the undefeated Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints (10-0) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd (4-5) will travel to Renville for a matchup against Renville County West (3-9) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
MCC 52, MLAC 40
SLAYTON — Coming off of back-to-back losses, the Murray County Central girls basketball team found its way back into the win column with a 52-40 defeat over Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey Tuesday night.
Ava Deacon led the way with 13 points and four steals, while Kelli Miller shot a perfect 3 for 3 at the perimeter to finish with 9 points. Taylor Larson also tallied 11 points, and went 2 for 3 at the arc.
Kat Miller grabbed a team-high six rebounds, four of which were defensive.
The Rebels shot 31% from the field, 47% from the 3 and went 13 for 20 at the charity stripe.
Murray County Central (5-7) now turns its attention to a road matchup against Adrian-Ellsworth (7-4) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Canby 58, LQPV 37
MADISON — The Canby and Lac Qui Parle Valley girls basketball team saw five lead changes and went into halftime tied at 34, but it was the Lancers that prevailed for a 58-37 win Tuesday night behind Ava Danielson’s 17 points and three assists.
Frank Josie followed Danielson with 13 points, while Rachel Jelen added another 12, and went 2 for 2 at the 3-point line.
Canby pulled away in the second half and outshot the Eagles 34-13.
The Lancers overall shot 42% from the field and 39% from the 3.
Canby (6-6) next hosts MACCRAY (7-3) on Thursday at 7:15 p.m.
Adrian-Ellsworth 47, WWG 45
WESTBROOK — Riley Parker’s 21 points weren’t enough to prevent Westbrook-Walnut Grove from suffering its first back-to-back losses of the season on Tuesday night. Despite a valiant effort, the Chargers girls basketball team fell 47-45 against Adrian-Ellsworth.
The loss came on the heels of another hard-fought battle against Southwest Minnesota Christian on Thursday, which WWG lost 54-49.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (8-4) will go on the road for a matchup against Edgerton (7-5) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
HBC 72, RRC 20
LAMBERTON — A solid rebounding effort wasn’t enough to produce points for the Red Rock Central girls basketball team on Tuesday night as the Falcons fell 72-20 to Hills-Beaver Creek.
Donkersloot posted a pair of team-highs with 10 rebounds and 6 points while Maia Scheffler dished out four assists in the loss.
Red Rock Central (0-13) looks to add a win to its resume when it hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (0-9) on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
