Tigers fall to New Ulm on senior night despite consistent execution
MARSHALL — Monday night was senior night for the Marshall gymnastics team in its penultimate home meet of the season against New Ulm. The Tigers got their score right up near their season-high but couldn’t pull out a victory over New Ulm, falling 132.95-118.3.
“They’ve been a vital part of the team since they started,” Marshall head coach Samantha Nielsen said of the team’s three seniors, Chioma Onyeaghala, Kendall Walerius and Naya Grahan. “I’ve been able to coach them since they started and it’s been really fun. They always bring a bright energy to the gym and always work their hardest to make sure their teammates are supported and encouraged all the time.”
While Marshall wasn’t able to secure the team victory, the Tigers earned five of the top 6 all-around finishers, after New Ulm’s Josie Sellner took first at 34.775.
Leading the charge for the Tigers, Autumn Deutz scored a 30.775 to finish as the individual runner-up while Shyann Murphy placed third at 30.05.
Also scoring for the Tigers, Leah Wing and Onyeaghala clocked in at 28.400 and 27.475 respectively while Raya Goergen placed sixth at 27.425.
“It’s awesome to be consistent at this point in the season,” Nielsen said. “We’re ramping up toward the section meet in a couple of weeks, and with the end of the season comes some injuries and overuse, so it’s really nice to be consistent now and on our way up so we can build up for a higher score at sections.”
Deutz had Marshall’s top single-event finish, scoring a 7.800 in the bars to finish as the event runner-up to Sellner’s 8.600. Murphy also placed fourth in the event for Marshall at 7.500.
Deutz’s 8.125 score on the floor was also the highest score by a Marshall gymnast in a single event on the day, earning her fifth place. Onyeaghala and Murphy each scored a 7.85 to tie for seventh.
Onyeaghala was the Tigers’ top finisher in the vault, scoring an 8.075 to place fifth while Leah Wing placed sixth at 7.900.
Wing and Murphy led Marshall on the beam at 7.225 and 7.200, good for fifth and sixth place, while Deutz took seventh at 7.05.
Marshall will host Luverne on Friday for its final home meet of the year at 6 p.m.
“I think [the focus is] just making sure we treat those injuries and make sure that they get some rest,” Nielsen said of the upcoming meet. “At the same time, continuing to work on their upgrades that they’ve been working on all season so that we can put it in our routine before sections.”
