RTR boys down TMB for eighth straight win

RTR 61, TMB 58 

TRACY — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team held on for a 61-58 victory Tuesday evening over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. The win marks eight straight for the Knights. 

The two teams were evenly matched, and the biggest difference was TMB’s 10 steals to RTR’s four. The Knights committed six more turnovers than the Panthers but held a slight edge in its field goal shooting to seal the win. 

RTR shot 41% from the field, went 4 for 16 at the 3, and just 9 of 18 at the free throw line. TMB shot 38% in the field, made 4 of 22 3-point attempts and also shot 50% at the line. 

For the Knights, Juhl Drake marked a double-double performance with 12 points, 13 rebounds along with six assists. Chase Christianson led with 19 points to seven rebounds. Sean Griesse followed with 17 points. 

On TMB’s end, Trevor Smith had a game-high 27 points on 41% field goal shooting and gathered four steals. Alex Munson also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, with four steals. Griffin Zick tallied another 11 points. 

RTR (12-2) will look to keep its good stride going when it next travels to take on Westbrook-Walnut Grove (11-4) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. 

TMB will aim to bounce back at MACCRAY (4-11) with a 7 p.m. tip off on Thursday.

No. 10 Marshall 63, Worthington 39

WORTHINGTON — The No. 10 Marshall boys basketball team extended its win streak to 7 games on Tuesday with a 63-39 road win over Worthington.

The Tigers’ scoring efforts were once again well-balanced with seven players converting multiple field goals. Alex Franson led the way with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting while Cooper Mensink added another 11 points. Davion Xayarath also chipped in 8 while Levi Maeyeart and Mason Graven added another 7 apiece.

Oliver Voigt led Marshall’s rebounding efforts with six total rebounds and two offensive boards. Still, the Tigers and Trojans tied on the glass with five offensive and 17 defensive rebounds each.

Marshall built a 22-10 advantage in the turnover battle behind six steals from Franson and another five from Mensink. Voigt and Xayarath each also blocked a shot.

Marshall (13-3) returns to its home court to host Belle Plaine (10-2) on Friday at 7:15 pm.

Springfield 92, Wabasso 60 

WABASSO — The Wabasso boys basketball team tried to overcome a 34-point halftime deficit, but couldn’t find the answers to complete a comeback against No. 8 Springfield in a 92-60 loss Tuesday evening. 

Calvin Hanna led the Rabbits with 16 points, behind a team-high four 3-pointers. Tavyn Larson and Caden Frericks each finished with 10 points a piece. 

The Tigers have just one loss this season, comingon Dec. 16 to an undefeated Cedar Mountain, and have posed a threat to all its opponents this year. 

Wabasso has now dropped four of its last six games, but still holds a winning record at 9-7 overall. 

The Rabbits will look to get back in the win column when it next travels to take on Sleepy Eye (7-8) on Friday at 7:30 p.m. 

WWG 84, YME 51 

WESTBROOK — The Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team held Yellow Medicine East to just 19 first-half points and had five players finish in double digits to earn an 84-51 Tuesday night win. 

Both Hudsen and Jackson Jenniges finished with 19 points apiece to lead WWG, and Jackson hit a team-high five 3-pointers. 

Drew Swanson and Neil Kuehl each added 15 points, and Connor Jackels followed with 10. 

YME put up a fight to rally back in the second half with 32 points to the Chargers’ 36, but trailing 48-19 at halftime was too much of a deficit to fully overcome. 

For the Sting, Jacob Peterson led the way with 10 points, while Gunnar Fagen, Wakinyan GreyCloud and Eric Jimenez all finished with 8. 

WWG (11-4) faces tough competition next when it hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (12-2) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. 

YME (2-13) also faces a strong competitor and will look to snap its eight-game losing streak next on Thursday at No. 2 Dawson-Boyd (10-3) with a 7:30 p.m. tip off. 

MCC 78, RRC 58

SLAYTON — Aidan Swenson exploded with a 35-point performance on Tuesday night as the Murray County Central boys basketball team pulled away for a 78-58 win over Red Rock Central.

Beyond volume, Swenson also scored with efficiency. He shot 17 of 24 from the field, good for a 71% clip, and attempted just three free throws to get to his point total. His seven rebounds were also a game-high.

Gavin Gillette also contributed heavily to the MCC offense, finishing with 18 points on 7 of 15 shooting and dishing out six assists with no turnovers. Hudson Schryvers also dished out six assists with one turnover, grabbed six rebounds and scored 6 points for the Rebels.

Henry Stavnes did what he could to keep the Falcons in the game, finishing with 24 points and five 3-pointers. Jordan Therkilsen and Abe Stavnes each added another eight points.

Gillette and Schryvers grabbed three steals each while Swenson and Dylan Kluis each contributed another 2, leading MCC to a 5-19 edge in the turnover battle. 

Murray County Central (9-5) will go on the road for a matchup against Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (2-11) in Okabena on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Red Rock Central (2-13) will look to end its six-game skid when it goes on the road to face Edgerton (6-7) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
