RTR’s well-dispersed offense stymies MCC

TYLER — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team’s well-distributed offensive attack allowed the Knights to jump out to an early lead on Thursday night against Murray County Central. The Knights more than doubled the Rebels’ score at halftime, building a 34-14 lead, and cruised to a 52-40 victory from there.
Adalia Matzner led the Rebels’ scoring efforts with 10 points while Avery Schreurs added another 9. Also contributing, Paisley Thooft, Ava Karbo, Dilyn Werkman, Ava Guida and Makayla Hesse each also scored 5 or more points.
Karbo also led RTR on the glass with 10 rebounds while Werkman contributed another seven. RTR finished the night with a 42-30 rebounding advantage, though MCC built an 18-13 edge on the offensive glass.
Taylor Larson led the charge for MCC on the offensive glass with five rebounds while Kat Miller and Thea Schneider each grabbed another four. Larson tallied nine total rebounds on the night while Miller and Schneider finished with six apiece,
Ava Deacon scored a team-high 15 points for MCC while Schneider and Larson added 7 each. Deacon was also a force on the defensive end, tallying 10 steals.
Murray County Central (5-10) will look to string together cons when it hosts Red Rock Central (0-16) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (7-8) aims to recapture its early-season magic when it heads to Lamberton for a matchup against RRC with the opportunity to get back to .500 on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
KMS 60, Minneota 53
MINNEOTA — Although three Vikings scored in double digits and they outrebounded their opponents, the Minneota girls basketball team fell short 60-53 to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Thursday night.
Jaylyn Coequyt finished with a team-high 16 points and 14 rebounds, Kiersyn Hulzebos followed with 11 points and four assists, while Claire Rost tallied 11 points. Eden Meagher had a near double-double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.
Minneota outrebounded the Fighting Saints 39-36, but it was the 22 turnovers that were the biggest challenge to overcome. KMS only had 12 turnovers, and also had 15 steals to the Vikings eight.
KMS shot 37% from the field, 24% from the 3 and 69% at the free throw. Minneota shot at 27-41-55% marks.
Minneota (10-6) next travels to Madison to do battle with Lac qui Parle Valley (5-9) on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.
YME 61, Dawson-Boyd 32
GRANITE FALLS — Bayli Sneller and Alana Almich combined for 35 points on Thursday night as the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team doubled up Dawson-Boyd by halftime en route to a 61-32 win.
Almich led the team with a game-high 18 points while Sneller contributed another 17. Almich scored 13 of her points in the first half while Sneller scored another 10 before the break, leading YME to the locker room with a 35-16 advantage.
For the Blackjacks, Alivia Estling led the way with 10 points while Laurea Schreier and Claire Stratmoen added another 9 and 8 respectively. No other Blackjacks made more than one shot.
Bailey Mortenson grabbed eight rebounds for the Sting while Abigale Bones contributed a pair of blocks. Klaira Shackelford and Sneller each also logged four steals.
For the Blackjacks, Alyssa Swedzinski grabbed a game-high nine boards and tied Stratmoen with a team-leading three steals.
Yellow Medicine East (8-7) will look to slay the giant when it goes on the road to face the undefeated Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints (16-0) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd (4-9) will attempt to avoid its fifth consecutive loss when it matches up against De Smet (S.D.) (7-3) at Colman-Egan Area School in South Dakota on Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
HBC 59, WWG 44
WESTBROOK — After a competitive first half which saw the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team head into the locker room facing a 6-point deficit, the Chargers couldn’t get anything going in the second half of their game against Hills-Beaver Creek on Thursday. The Patriots limited WWG to 18 points after the break and defeated the Chargers 59-44.
At halftime, WWG trailed 26-18. Riley Parker had the hot hand for WWG in the first half, scoring 12 of her 15 points. Yet, HBC limited the Chargers to five second-half field goals.
Leah Carter found her rhythm after the break, accounting for three of those field goals as well as another four free throws. She finished the night with a team-high 16 points in the loss.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (11-4) competes again on Saturday when it goes on the road for a game against Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (1-11) at 7:30 p.m.
No. 10 CMC 68, Canby 28
CANBY — The Canby girls basketball team couldn’t quite find answers to No. 10 Central Minnesota Christian and suffered a 68-28 loss Thursday evening.
The Lancers were limited in several aspects of the game, and went just 8 for 40 from the field. They also shot 18.5% from the 3-point line, and made 9 of 14 free throw attempts.
Addison Driessen and Ava Danielson shared a team-high 6 points apiece, while Danielson led with 11 rebounds and Dreissen shot 2 for 4 from the perimeter.
Canby was down 31-12 by halftime and limited to just 16 points through the second half.
The Lancers (8-8) will attempt to get back above .500 when they go on the road to face Dawson-Boyd (4-9) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
A/E 73, RRC 30
ADRIAN — Tia Donkersloot scored 18 points for the Red Rock Central girls basketball team in its Thursday game against Adrian-Ellsworth. Yet, the Falcons had no answer for Adrian/Ellsworth’s offense, and RRC fell 73-30.
Red Rock Central (0-16) looks to end the drought when it hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (7-8) on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
MACCRAY 61, TMB 20
TRACY — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team dropped its 11th consecutive game, and couldn’t find its rhythm in a 61-20 loss to MACCRAY Thursday night. The Panthers went into halftime with a 34-1 deficit.
Melaina Ankrum led TMB with 4 points, and Allison Edwards collected a team-high five rebounds.
TMB was limited to a 16% field goal shooting mark, going 8 for 50. It also only attempted seven free throws, making just two.
MACCRAY shot 35% from the field and went 13 for 14 at the charity stripe.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (1-11) will try to end its recent woes when it hosts Windom (12-3) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
