Stensrud’s well-rounded effort propels Lakers past MCC

Lakeview 65, MCC 48

SLAYTON — The Lakeview girls basketball team grabbed its fifth consecutive win Friday night as it defeated Murray County Central 65-48 behind a team-high 30 points, four steals and five assists from Brynn Stensrud. She also went 6 for 6 at the free throw line. 

Brook Gunlogson followed with 11 points. Carmen Varpness grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while Stendsrud collected another seven. 

Although Lakeview only shot 6 for 20 at the perimeter, it shot 31% from the field and grabbed a team total 45 rebounds, 27 of which were defensive. MCC collected just 23 total rebounds.

For the Rebels, Kelli Miller led with 14 points and went 4 for 7 at the 3-point line. 

Ava Deacon followed with 13 points and three steals, and Kat Miller tallied 11 points. Both Suttyn Schryvers and Kate Blankenship shared a team-high five rebounds. 

MCC shot 27% from the field and went 6 for 14 at the free throw line. 

Lakeview (8-2) turns its attention for a road matchup against Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (5-5) today at 1 p.m. with the goal of picking up its sixth straight victory.

Murray County Central (4-7) will try to string together some wins when it heads home to Slayton to host Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (0-8) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Minneota 62, Canby 56

CANBY — Kiersyn Hulzebos stepped up to lead a group of three Vikings in double figures in a girls basketball game between Minneota and Canby on Friday night. Hulzebos scored a team-high 19 points on the night in Minneota’s 62-56 win.

Hulzebos shot 8 of 16 from the field with three 3-pointers. Also contributing, Sarah Gruenes scored 11 points on 4 of 11 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers, while Claire Rost contributed another 10 points while knocking down six of her eight free throw attempts.

Canby’s Ava Danielson finished as the game’s leading scorer with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. She shot 8 of 18 from the field and four of her rebounds came on the offensive glass. Brynn Kockelman added another 11 points for the Lancers on 3 of 15 shooting.

Minneota held a narrow 32-31 rebounding advantage, but Canby built a 9-6 edge on the offensive glass. Eden Meagher led Minneota’s rebounding efforts with 10 total rebounds and three offensive boards, while Jaylyn Coequyt contributed eight defensive rebounds.

Hulzebos and Rost each recorded three steals for Minneota while Nevaeh Hennen had a steal and a block. 

Minneota (8-3) heads to Ortonville (0-11) on Monday at 7:15 p.m. with the chance to earn its fourth consecutive win. 

Canby (5-6) will look to get back to .500 when it travels to Madison for a game against Lac qui Parle Valley (3-6) on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

YME 86, Benson 34

GRANITE FALLS — Alana Almich and Bailey Mortenson combined for 50 points to lead the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team to an 86-34 win over Benson, snapping a three-game losing skid. 

Almich and Mortenson finished with 26 and 24 points respectively. Bayli Sneller also had a big night, finishing with 18 points that all came in the first half from six made 3-pointers. 

The big win moves the Sting to 4-6 on the season. They will next travel to Clara City for a matchup against MACCRAY (6-3) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Lester Prairie 85, Wabasso 48

LESTER PRAIRIE — The Wabasso girls basketball team fell shy of its first win of the season on Friday night, dropping 85-48 against Lester Prairie.

The Rabbits have lost each of their last eight games by double figures and two in a row now by at least 35 points.

Wabasso (0-11) travels to Madison for a matchup against Lac qui Parle Valley (3-6) in an effort to earn its first win of the season on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
