Tigers’ team effort topples Redwood

Marshall 87, Redwood Valley 52
REDWOOD FALLS — A well-balanced offensive effort saw 13 members of the Marshall boys basketball team convert a field goal on Thursday night as the Tigers defeated Redwood Valley 87-52.
Alex Franson and Cooper Mensink led Marshall scorers with 15 and 12 points respectively. Franson shot 7 of 11 from the field while Mensink shot 4 of 10 with four 3-pointers. Six other Tigers scored at least 5 points, while Mensink dished out a team-high three assists.
Marshall outrebounded Redwood Valley 37-18, including a 16-9 advantage on the offensive glass. Levi Maeyaert’s six total rebounds and three offensive rebounds were both team-highs, while Jack Meier and JR Vierstraete each contributed another five boards.
Franson came away with four steals in the game on the defensive end.
Marshall (8-3) next takes on Delano (4-5) tonight at 6 p.m.
RTR 49, MCC 45
SLAYTON — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team remained hot on Thursday night, picking up its seventh win in its last eight games with a 49-45 victory against Murray County Central. The Knights’ win also ended a five-game win streak for the Rebels.
Gavin Gillette led MCC with 18 points on 16 attempts, including 4 of 8 shooting from beyond the arc. The rest of the Rebels shot a combined 0 of 7 from long range.
Aidan Swenson contributed another 14 points for MCC while Hudson Schryvers dished out five assists. Swenson and Schryvers also finished with 14 and 10 rebounds respectively, giving Swenson a double-double.
On the defensive end, Dylan Kluis grabbed four steals while Gillette finished with another three. Swenson also logged a pair of blocks.
While MCC shot 3 of 11 from the free-throw line, RTR shot 12 of 18. The Knights shot 30% from the field and 14% from 3-point range, compared to 36% from the field and 27% from 3 for MCC.
Individual stats for Russell-Tyler-Ruthton were unavailable upon request.
RTR (7-2) opens a four-game homestand tonight, hosting Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (1-6) at 7:30 p.m.
Murray County Central (8-3) will travel to Edgerton to take on Southwest Minnesota Christian (5-3) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
RRC 44, A/E 41
LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid and came out on top in an overtime thriller as it defeated Adrian-Ellsworth 44-41.
Adrian held the 1-point advantage at halftime, but both teams locked it up at 40 to end regulation to send the game to an extra period.
Henry Stavnes finished the night with a double-double to lead the way with 22 points and 11 rebounds.
Abe Stavnes followed with 9 points and six rebounds, while Austin Imker tallied 8 points and four rebounds.
Red Rock Central (2-7) looks to keep its momentum going when it goes on the road to face off against Wabasso (7-4) on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
HBC 55, WWG 46
HILLS — Drew Swanson’s strong scoring output couldn’t extend the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team’s win streak to five games on Thursday night as the Chargers fell 55-46 against Hills-Beaver Creek.
The Patriots were motivated heading into the game. Coming off their first loss of the season, HBC wasn’t about to take another.
Swanson scored 25 points for the Chargers in the loss, including 15 in the first half with three 3-pointers.
Hudson Jenniges also scored 15 points. Jackson Jenniges was the only other Charger to convert a field goal, finishing with 3 points.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (9-2) will host Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (1-6) for its next game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
