Tigers top Belle Plaine to stay unbeaten

No. 1 Marshall 83,

Belle Plaine 51

BELLE PLAINE — A double-double from Avery Fahl and a game-high 18 points from Paige Gillingham set the stage for another lopsided win for the No. 1 Marshall girls basketball team on Friday night. The Tigers built an 18-point lead by halftime and never looked back in an 83-51 win over Belle Plaine.

Gillingham shot 8 of 14 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers while Fahl added another 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting with a 3. Fahl’s 11 total rebounds, along with Avery Schneekloth’s 10, also propelled Marshall to a 43-30 edge on the boards.

Schneekloth grabbed six offensive boards for Marshall, leading the Tigers’ 23-7 edge on the offensive glass, while Gillingham contributed four and Fahl, Taleigha Bigler and Reese Drake each grabbed another three. 

Drake was the team’s second-leading scorer with 15 points. She also dished out a game-high five assists while Schneekloth contributed another four without a turnover. The two also were Marshall’s leaders in the turnover battle, with Drake snatching seven steals and Schneekloth snatching another five with a block.

Marshall (19-0) has nearly a week off before its next game, hosting Waseca (1-16) on Friday at 7:15 p.m. When the teams met in Waseca on Jan. 4, Marshall ran away with a 65-22 victory.

WWG 49, RTR 48

WESTBROOK — Another big scoring outing from Leah Carter lifted the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team to a narrow victory over Russell-Tyler-Ruthton on Friday night. The Chargers held a 4-point lead at halftime and held off a second-half surge from the Knights to claim a 49-48 victory.

Carter scored a game-high 19 points in the win, 10 of which came after halftime, while Natalie Wahl and Riley Parker each scored another 10 for the Chargers.

For the Knights, Avery Schreurs scored a team-high 15 points on 7 of 13 shooting while Adaliea Matzner added another 8 on 4 of 5 shooting.

Matzner also grabbed seven rebounds for the Knights, trailing only Paisley Thooft’s eight. Thooft also snagged six steals in the loss.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (13-5) next competes on Thursday when it heads to Lamberton for a matchup against Red Rock Central (0-20).

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (9-9) will aim to get back above .500 when it hosts undefeated No. 3 Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (16-0) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

CMC 83, TMB 55 

TRACY — 31 combined points from Gretchen Lanoue and Brianna Duscher wasn’t enough as the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton team fell to No. 7 Central Minnesota Christian 83-55 Friday evening. 

Lanoue finished the night with a game-high 21 points to Duscher’s 10, while Lanoue and Kately Ruppert shared a team-high four rebounds. Melaina Ankrum dished five assists, while Ella Voss led with three steals. 

The Panthers fought a 37-22 halftime deficit, but CMC had five players finish with double digits to secure the win. 

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (3-13) will look to get back to stringing wins together when it goes on the road to take on Minneota (11-7) on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m.

Lakeview 70, Dawson-Boyd 39 

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview girls basketball team is continuing on its good stride and trying to find some consistency with a 70-39 win over Dawson-Boyd Friday night. Both Anah Schmidt and Brynn Stensrud tallied double-double performances. 

Anah Schmidt led the way with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Brynn Stensrud followed with 14 points and another 10 boards. 

Stensrud and Savanna Louwagie also collected four steals each. 

Although it was an off shooting night for the Lakers from the 3-point line, going 2 for 19, they shot 33% from the field, and made up for its shooting troubles through its defense. They collected 56 total rebounds, 34 of which came from defense. Dawson-Boyd had just 28 rebounds. 

For the Blackjacks, Lindsey Lund led with 13 points to four rebounds, and shot 3 for 9 from the perimeter. Alivia Estling had a team-high nine rebounds. 

Dawson-Boyd was limited to shooting 20% from the field. 

Lakeview (12-5) will look to pick up consecutive wins for the first time since Jan. 3 and 4 when it hosts No. 10 Hancock (13-3) on Monday at 6 p.m.

Dawson-Boyd (4-13) will look to snap an eight-game losing skid on Monday when it hosts Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda (7-12) at 7:30 p.m.

Sleepy Eye 90, Wabasso 35 

WABASSO — The Wabasso girls basketball team couldn’t find answers to Sleepy Eye, and suffered a 90-35 loss Friday night at home. 

Elizabeth Morin finished with a team-high 11 points, while Ava Samyn followed with 8 points and led with seven rebounds. 

The Rabbits were held to just 18 first half points, and went into the locker room down 48-18. The deficit was too much to overcome, and again was limited offensively through the second half. 

Wabasso (1-19) looks to end its five-game skid when it hosts Murray County Central (6-11) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Edgerton 75, RRC 28

EDGERTON — The Red Rock Central girls basketball team fell 75-28 on the road against Edgerton on Friday night.

Kendra Schroeder scoreda team-high 12 points on four 3-pointers in the game.

Red Rock Central (0-20) will aim to find its way to the win column when it hosts Westbrook-Walnut Grove (13-4) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

KMS 74, Canby 50

CANBY — The Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Fighting Saints’ undefeated start to the season continued on Friday night as they defeated the Canby girls basketball team 74-50.

Ava Danielson led the Lancers with 19 points on 7 of 14 shooting while Brynn Kockelman added another 11 points for Canby.

Danielson’s eight total rebounds and five offensive rebounds were both team-highs while Ella Thovson and Rachel Jelen each contributed another five boards.

Defensively, Thovson and Audrey Hentges each logged a block and a steal.

Canby falls to 9-9 with the loss and will aim to climb back above the .500 mark when it heads to Elkton to take on Estelline-Hendricks (S.D.) today at 2 p.m.

HLOF 57, MCC 52

FULDA — Thea Schneider’s offensive production wasn’t enough to get the Murray County Central girls basketball team a win on Friday night as the Rebels fell 57-52 to Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda.

Schneider scored a game-high 16 points, shooting 4 of 8 from the field and 5 of 7 from the free-throw line. Her five rebounds also tied Ava Deacon for second on the team to Kate Blankenship’s six. Blankenship and Deacon each grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds.

Deacon snagged six steals on the defensive end while Blankenship added another three with a block.

Murray County Central (6-11) plays its second of three consecutive road games on Monday when it takes on Wabasso (1-19) at 7:30 p.m.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Wabasso 84, Sleepy Eye 81

SLEEPY EYE — Five players scored in double digits to help the Wabasso boys basketball team survive a competitive matchup, and came away with an 84-81 win over Sleepy Eye Friday night. The Rabbits trailed by 1-point at halftime, but Caden Frericks impressive 19 points with 20 rebounds helped put them in front. 

Along with Frericks, Drew Kemp tallied a team-high 21 points, followed by Brayden Guetter with 16, Joseph Rohlik with 12 and Calvin Hanna with 10, who also led with five assists and four steals. 

Jack Burns had four steals as well. 

Although Wabasso gave up 22 turnovers, it gathered a team-high 46 rebounds and 22 assists to combat its mistakes. 

Wabasso (10-7) will remain in Sleepy Eye for a Tuesday matchup against Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (7-8) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
