Four Vikings prep for Class A tournament

ST. PAUL — Adam Devlaeminck, Brock Fier, Eli Gruenes and Cael Fier are all making their way up to the Twin Cities to represent Minneota in the State Class A wrestling tournament on Friday at the Xcel Energy Center.
Out of the Section 5A individual championships that took place last weekend in Granite Falls, Devlaeminck was crowned champion of the 133-class. Brock and Cael Fier finished as 172 and 215 runners-up, as did Gruenes in the 189.
Devlaeminck is the lone Viking this year that has previous state experience. He also made the tournament last year to compete in the 127-class, and moved on to the second round before falling in a 5-2 decision there and an 8-4 decision in the consolation bracket.
This year, No. 5 Devlaeminck will be competing in the 133, where he currently ranks ninth in all of Class A. He’s enters the tournament with a 35-2 record, and has recorded 14 pins, eight technical falls and seven major decisions.
Devlaeminck will take on No. 6 Reggie George (33-4) out of Osakis in the first round.
George ranks eighth in Class A’s 133, and has recorded 17 pins, five technical falls and five major decisions.
No. 5 Brock (31-13) will compete in the 172, and go up against first-seed Kane Larson (42-4) from Filmore/Lanesboro.
Brock currently ranks sixth in Class A’s 160, but will competing a class up at state. This season, he has 17 pins and four major decisions to his name.
Larson ranks second in 172, and has recorded 17 pins and 18 technical falls.
No. 5 Gruenes (40-2) will have a competitive dual up against No. 2 Alex Lea (36-8) in the 189 from Westfield.
Gruenes ranks fourth in the 189-class, and enters state with 25 pins, three technical falls and two major decisions. Lea has recorded 27 pins, two technical falls and one major decision.
Fifth-seeded Cael Fier (26-11) will also have a big matchup against No. 4 George Doherty (30-2) from LeSueur-Henderson in the 215.
Fier enters with 10 points, one technical fall and six major decisions, while Doherty has recorded 18 pins, two technical falls and two major decisions.
Doherty also ranks third in Class A’s 215.
The individual tournament first round begins at 9 a.m. on Friday, with quarterfinals at 4 p.m. Consolations, semifinals and championships will take place throughout Saturday, also beginning at 9 a.m.
