Gillette’s 30-point performance propels MCC past WWG, 70-63

WESTBROOK — Gavin Gillette dropped an efficient 30 points for the Murray County Central boys basketball team in its road matchup against Westbrook-Walnut Grove on Friday night. The senior guard was one of three Rebels to reach double figures in MCC’s 70-63 win over the Chargers.

Gillette shot 9 of 17 from the field and knocked down four of his five 3-point attempts in the game. He also shot 8 of 11 from the charity stripe, accounting for all but two of his team’s attempts.

As a group, MCC shot 46% from the field and 60% from 3-point range while WWG shot 37% from the field and 33% from 3.

Drew Swanson led WWG in scoring with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, while Hudsen Jenniges added another 19 points. Kyle Curry also knocked down a trio of trifectas to finish with 11 points while Neil Kuehl added 9 points.

Aidan Swenson and Hudson Schryvers led MCC with seven rebounds each in the game, including a pair of offensive boards for Swenson. Shryvers also dished out five assists with two turnovers, and was one of three Rebels to record a block in the game alongside Gillette and Swenson.

Gillette snagged a team-high three steals.

MCC improves to 15-10 on the season with the win and hosts Edgerton (9-14) for its regular-season finale on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove falls to 16-9 on the season and heads into the playoffs after Monday’s game against Red Rock Central (2-22) in Lamberton at the same time.

Lester Prairie 79, Wabasso 68

LESTER PRAIRIE — A pair of double-doubles from Brayden Guetter and Caden Frericks still left the Wabasso boys basketball team shy of a victory in its regular-season finale on Friday. The Rabbits’ leading duo each finished with more than 10 points and 10 assists, but still Wabasso fell 79-68 to Lester Prairie.

Guetter and Frericks each scored 11 points in the game, leaving them shy of only Drew Kemp’s 13 points and Tavyn Larson’s 12. Guetter and Frericks shot 4 of 9 and 5 of 13 respectively, while Larson shot 5 of 6 from the field.

Guetter and Frericks were also the team’s leading rebounders with 14 and 13 total boards respectively. Frericks also grabbed six offensive rebounds while Guetter’s three blocks and two steals were both team-highs.

Guetter’s four assists were also second on the team. Leading the way, Calvin Hanna finished with 10 assists on five turnovers. He also scored 8 points on 3 of 7 shooting, and his pair of 3-pointers tied him with Joe Rohlik for the second-most makes from beyond the arc to Kemp’s three.

Wabasso falls to 14-11 on the season and will now await for its seeding in the Section 3A tournament. The North bracket subsection quarterfinals will be held on March 1 at Montevideo, following Thursday’s play-in round at the site of the high seed.

No. 9 Cedar Mountain 98,

Canby 51

LESTER PRAIRIE –The Canby boys basketball team couldn’t get an offensive foothold in its regular-season finale against Cedar Mountain on Friday night, falling 98-51 to the No. 9 Cougars.

Owen Peterson scored a team-high 20 points on 8 of 15 shooting from the field nad 3 of 8 shooting from 3-point range for the Lancers. Jack Abrahamson also shot 4 of 7 from 3-point range to finish with 14 points while Jace Rangaard added another 10 points.

Cayden Anderson led Canby on the glasss with six total rebounds while Will Abrahamson dished out five assists.

Canby falls to 1-23 with the loss and will now prepare for the Section 3A tournament. The play-in round will be held at the site of the high seed on Thursday at 7 p.m.
