Knights’ strong rebounding effort leads the way in 62-34 win over HLO/F

RTR 62, HLOF 34

OKABENA — Domination on the boards was the story of the game for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team on Thursday night. Paisley Thooft and Dilyn Werkman alone combined for 27 rebounds as the Knights defeated Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda 62-34.

Thooft posted game-highs with 15 total and seven offensive rebounds, while Werkman grabbed six boards on offense and another on the defensive end. The two also scored 7 and 9 points respectively.

Makayla Hesse was the team’s leading scorer in the game, shooting a blazing hot 5 of 7 from 3-point range to finish with 16 points. Avery Schreurs and Dilyn Werkman added another 11 and 9 respectively, with Schreurs also dishing out a team-high four assists.

On the defensive end, Thooft tied Addisyn Serreyn with a team-high three steals.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (11-14) returns to its home court to host Edgerton (14-10) for its regular-season finale on Monday at 7:30 p.m. The Knights held off Edgerton for a narrow 40-39 victory back when they faced off on Jan. 2.

Lakeview 56, YME 52

COTTONWOOD — Some clutch shooting from Brook Gunlogson and Aleiah Rosenau helped the Lakeview girls basketball team steal a win against Yellow Medicine East on Thursday night. Despite facing a late deficit, Gunlogson hit a go-ahead 3-pointer before she and Rosenau each knocked down a pair of free throws to ice a 56-52 win.

Brynn Stensrud finished the game with a team-high 18 points for the Lakers while Anah Schmidt and Gunlogson added 12 and 13 respectively. Schmidt’s 14 rebounds also gave her a double-double, with eight of her boards coming on the offensive glass.

Stensrud was also among the Lakers’ more efficient scorers, shooting 7 of 20 from the field and 3 of 8 from beyond the arc. The rest of the team shot 23% from the field and 3 of 11 from 3-point range.

For the Sting, Bailey Mortenson scored a game-high 24 points in the losing effort. Alongside her, Abbey Bones added another 11 points, 8 of which came in the first half.

Schmidt

Savanna Louwagie grabbed eight rebounds for the Lakers, six of which came on the offensive glass, and her three assists trailed only Gunlogson’s four.

Defensively, Louwagie came away with a team-leading six steals while Schmidt defended the interior with a pair of blocks and three steals.

Lakeview (18-7) and Yellow Medicine East (8-17) now await seeding for the Section 3A tournament, which starts with the play-in round on Thursday followed by the North subsection quarterfinals on Saturday in Montevideo.

HBC 68, RRC 16 

HILLS — The Red Rock Girls basketball team suffered a 68-16 loss to Hills-Beaver Creek Thursday night. 

Paige Wondercheck led the Falcons with 9 points. 

Red Rock Central (0-25) will have one last chance to pick up a regular-season win on Monday when it hosts Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (8-16) at 7:30 p.m.The Falcons fell 61-34 when they took on the Coyotes on Jan. 2.

Adrian-Ellsworth 59, WWG 55 (OT)

ADRIAN — A pair of strong scoring efforts from Leah Carter and Riley Parker weren’t enough to lift the Westbrook-Walnut Grove girls basketball team to its ninth win in 10 games on Thursday night. The Chargers battled hard against Adrian-Ellsworth, but after the two teams were locked in a stalemate at the end of regulation, the Dragons defeated WWG 59-55 in overtime. 

Carter scored a game-high 28 points in the loss while Parker added another 19 for the Chargers.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove (17-7) will look to regain its recent momentum in its regular-season finale on Monday when it heads to Edgerton for a matchup against Southwest Minnesota Christian (17-8) at 7:30 p.m. When the two teams last met, the Eagles downed the Chargers by a final score of 54-49.

MACCRAY 68, Dawson-Boyd 25

CLARA CITY — Limited to just 8 points in the first half, the Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team fell to MACCRAY 68-25 Thursday night in its final regular season game. 

Claire Stratmoen led with 10 points and went 2 for 5 from the 3-point line. Alivia Estling had a team-high 11 rebounds, while Kylar Hjelmeland had seven. 

The Blackjacks faced a 53-8 halftime deficit, which was too much of a barrier to overcome throughout the second half. 

Dawson-Boyd overall shot 23% from the field and went 5 for 18 from the perimeter. MACCRAY shot 41% from the field and went 11 of 27 from the arc. 

Dawson-Boyd (7-17) will now prepare for the Section 3A tournament, which starts with the play-in round on Thursday before heading into the North subsection quarterfinals in Montevideo on Saturday. 

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

Madelia 81, RRC 51

LAMBERTON — The Red Rock Central boys basketball team couldn’t stage an upset against Madelia on Thursday, falling 81-51.

Henry Stavnes scored a team-high 21 points with five rebounds in the loss while Abe Stavnes added 13 points with seven rebounds. Jordan Therkilsen also recorded 7 points for the Falcons.

Red Rock Central (3-19) aims to avoid its fifth consecutive loss when it hosts Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (3-19) tonight at 7:30 p.m.

Wabasso 76, GFW 65 

WINTHROP — Caden Frericks’ team-high 21 points and 19 rebounds led the Wabasso boys basketball team to a 76-65 victory over Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 8-14 Thursday night. 

GFW held a slight 2-point lead at halftime, but the Rabbits came out with more momentum to pull away and outshot the Thunderbirds 43-30 in the second half. 

Along with Frericks, Drew Kemp finished with 14 points behind four 3-pointers, Brayden Guetter tallied 13 while Joseph Rohlik added another 10. Guetter and Calvin Hanna also distributed five assists each. 

Wabasso finished with 41 rebounds overall on the night to help create second-chance opportunities. 23 of them were defensive boards. 

Wabasso (14-9) will travel to Prinsburg to take on Central Minnesota Christian (19-4) for its next game on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
