Lancers send 6 wrestlers to state

GRANITE FALLS — The Canby wrestling team headlined the Section 5A individual championships on Saturday at Yellow Medicine East High School, claiming four individual champions and sending another pair of individuals to state as section runners-up.

Isaac Guzman and Eli Greenman earned section championships in 114 and 121, marking a repeat title for Greenman, while Tallen Merritt and Sam Drietz won 145 and 152 for the Lancers. Drietz was also a repeat champ after moving up from 145.

Also qualifying for state for the Lancers, Ty Rangaard was the 127 runner-up while Blake Giese was the same in 160. Giese went to state last year in 139 while Rangaard is new to the big event.

Brennan Giese and Jordan DePestel each just missed the cut with third-place finishes in the 139 and heavyweight divisions.

Minneota’s lone section champ was Adam Devlaeminck, who won 133. The Vikings also sent another trio of wrestlers to state with Brock and Cael Fier finishing as runners-up in 172 and 215 while Eli Gruenes was the 189 runner-up.

Blake Mead and Mason Javers finished on the outside looking in, placing third in 127 and 160.

Jacob Savig led hosting Quad County with a third-place finish in 215.

Canby enters the team state tournament as the fifth seed on Thursday, taking on No. 4 Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Area in the Class A quarterfinals at 9 a.m. The individual tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday at the Xcel Energy Center also starting at 9 a.m.

ST. JAMES — Fulda/Murray County Central’s Carson Klein and Quintin Lewis each earned individual section titles at Saturday’s Section 3A individual tournament, headline a group of four Rebels headed to the state meet.

Klein was the 189 3A champion while Lewis won 160; Lewis was also the champion of his weight class a year prior.

Also headed to state for F/MCC, Isaiah Wolske and Colby Kesteloot each finished as individual runners up in 172 and 285. 

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s David Schuh will continue to represent his team at the state tournament after winning the 133 weight class; he is the lone Panther to advance.

Wabasso also had a single individual champion, with Kaysen Harms winning 139, while Red Rock Central did not have any wrestlers advance to the state meet.
