Mortenson sets YME record with 43 points in play-in win

GRANITE FALLS –Bailey Mortenson paved the way for the Yellow Medicine East girls basketball team’s play-in victory on Thursday night with a massive offensive outburst. The freshman Sting forward went off for 43 points — a school record for both boys and girls — in the Section 3A North tournament matchup against Wabasso, leading the Sting to an 84-47 win.

Mortenson scored 24 first-half points to lead the Sting to a 45-27 lead at halftime, and went on to finish the game with a career-high. Bayli Sneller and Abbey Bones also contributed 12 points each in the win.

For the Rabbits, Elizabeth Morin led the team with a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double. She also had five blocks and a pair of steals, while Audrey Johnson added seven points with four assists.

Wabasso finishes its season at 1-26 with the loss and graduates one senior in Anistasia Smith, who was unavailable for Thursday’s game.

Yellow Medicine East improves to 9-17 with the win and now prepares to take on No. 2 MACCRAY (19-5) in the 3A North subsection quarterfinals at Montevideo High School on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The Wolverines defeated the Sting 76-47 when they last met on Jan. 6.

No. 8 RCW 68,

No. 9 Dawson-Boyd 28

RENVILLE — The No. 9 Dawson-Boyd girls basketball team couldn’t get its offense going in its Section 3A North play-in matchup against No. 8 Renville County West on Thursday night. The Jaguars scored 12 more points in the first half than the Blackjacks scored in the game, and Dawson-Boyd fell 68-28.

Claire Stratmoen led Dawson-Boyd in scoring with 10 points while Allysa Swedzinski and Laura Schreier added 9 and 7 respectively.

Dawson-Boyd shot 27% from the field and 15% from 3-point range in the game, while RCW shot 46% from the field and 43% from 3.

Swedzinski grabbed a team-high seven rebounds while Stratmoen and Alivia Estling each grabbed another six.

Dawson-Boyd finishes the season at 7-18, and graduates just one senior in Lindsey Lund. The Blackjacks will return much of their roster again the year after next as well, as their team features just three juniors.

SOUTH PLAY-IN

No. 7 MCC 80, No. 10 RRC 56

SLAYTON — Thea Schneider scored a team-high 19 points on Thursday night to extend the Murray County Central girls basketball team’s season with an 80-56 win over Red Rock Central in the Section 3A South play-in.

Schneider shot 8 of 17 from the field and also blocked two shots and snagged a steal on the defensive end. Also contributing offensively for the Rebels, Ava Deacon and Kat Miller each chipped in 12 points, Kate Blankenship and Calleigh Doeden added another 11 each and Taylor Larson finished with 10.

For the Falcons, Tia Donkersloot carried the offensive load with a game-high 25 points on 10 of 22 shooting from the field. She also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to earn a double-double in the loss.

Maia Scheffler added nine rebounds and six assists for RRC while Kendra Schroeder added another 9 points.

Suttyn Schryvers and Blankenship led MCC on the glass with seven rebounds each, while Deacon brought some defensive intensity with four steals.

Red Rock Central finishes its season at 0-27 and graduates two seniors in Scheffler and Sydney Vogel.

MCC, meanwhile, improves to 9-17 and lives to fight another day. The Rebels will now take on No. 2 Adrian-Ellsworth (16-8) in the subsection quarterfinals on Saturday at Worthington High School, with tip-off scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

MCC lost 53-39 to Adrian-Ellsworth back on Jan. 10 and 61-35 in the rematch on Feb. 7.

No. 9 TMB 51, No. 8 HLOF 42

OKABENA — The No. 9 Tracy-Milroy-Balaton girls basketball team overcame a halftime deficit to upset No. 8 Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda 51-42 in the Section 3A tournament play-in round to advance to round two.

The Panthers were down 3 points, 22-19, at the half, but took control of the game throughout the second half to outshoot the Coyotes 32-20 to finish the night off.

Gretchen Lanoue led the way with a double-double performance of 14 points and 13 rebounds. Marin Knott followed with 11 points with a team-high three assists.

TMB struggled with its shooting at times, but was able to hold off HLOF. The Panthers shot 28% from the field, but finished with 46 rebounds, 31 of which were defensive.

The Coyotes shot 20% from the field, and had 43 rebounds. Both teams also recorded 16 steals.

The biggest game difference was done at the free throw line. TMB made 17 of its 36 attempts, while HLOF went 8 of 17.

TMB (6-19) will next play top-seeded Hills-Beaver Creek (20-6) in the section’s second round at Worthington High School on Saturday at 11 a.m.

PREP BOYS BASKETBALL

No. 3 Dawson-Boyd 80,

No. 9 Montevideo 66

DAWSON — Senior forward Brayson Boike exploded for 32 points with five assists on Thursday night as the No. 2 Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team outlasted No. 9 Montevideo 80-66 in the Blackjacks’ home finale.

Boike shot 13 of 19 from the field and 4 of 9 from beyond the arc in the win. His assist total tied Jaxton Hastad for a team-high.

Also contributing offensively, Gunner Liebl scored 18 points with three assists while Drew Hjelmeland had a 12-point, 12-rebound double-double.

Hjelmeland’s three offensive boards tied Hastad for a team-high. On the defensive end, Hjelmeland also accounted for two blocks and a steal while Hastad had two steals and a block.

Dawson-Boyd improves to 22-3 with the win, marking its 12th straight victory. The Blackjacks wrap up the regular season with a road matchup at Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (21-4), a team that Dawson-Boyd defeated91-67 in Tracy on Jan. 10.

Luverne 91, Minneota 60

LUVERNE — The Minneota boys basketball team fell shy of pulling off the upset in its regular-season finale on Thursday, losing 91-60 to Luverne.

Lucas Rybinski led Minneota in scoring with 21 points on 6 of 12 shooting while Lincoln Jerzak added another 13 points on 5 of 10 shooting.

Setting up the baskets, Rybinski also dished out four assists with seven turnovers.

Hunter Carstensen led Minneota on the glass with six total rebounds, including four on the offensive glass, but Luverne outrebounded Minneota 30-24.

Rybinski recorded three steals in the loss.

Minneota finishes its regular season at 11-15 and now awaits its seeding for the Section 3A tournament, with the play-in round being scheduled for Thursday and the North subsection quarterfinals slated for Saturday at Montevideo.

CMC 79, Wabasso 64

PRINSBURG — Four scorers in double figures weren’t enough for the Wabasso boys basketball team to steal a victory from Central Minnesota Christian on Thursday night, falling 79-64 to the Bluejays.

Brayden Guetter led Wabasso offensively with 16 points on 6 of 14 shooting while Drew Kemp contributed 15 poitns on 5 of 9 shooting, all of the shots coming from beyond the arc.

Caden Frericks and Joe Rohlik each also scored 10 points.

Guetter and Rohlik tied with a team-leading four assists each while Frericks’ seven rebounds put him just ahead of Guetter and Calvin Hanna’s six.

On the defensive end, Frericks and Kemp each came away with a pair of steals while Guetter and Rohlik each blocked a shot.

Wabasso falls to 14-10 with the loss and next goes on the road to wrap up the regular season at Lester Prairie (12-12) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
