Tigers send 8 individuals to state, tie team record

Coequyt, Christenson, Marthaler, Schaefer claim individual 3AA titles

DAWSON — At Saturday’s Section 3AA individual tournament, the Marshall boys wrestling team punched seven additional tickets to the Class A state tournament. Keynan Coequyt, Landon Marthaler, Lincoln Christenson and Gavin Schaefer each won individual section titles while Brayden Chandler, Aidan Mattison and Braedyn VanMeveren finished as section runners-up to advance to the state tournament.

Aside from earning a berth in the team tournament on Thursday, the Tigers will now have eight individuals competing on Friday and Saturday, with Hannah Ratajczak also representing Marshall on the girls side.

In 114 and 127, Christenson and Marthaler each repeated as section champions.

Christenson, who won 107 last season, pinned each of his three opponents with a 35-second pin of Dawson-Boyd/Lac qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United’s Griffin Johnson, a 1:46 pin of Hutchinson’s Shane Kramer and a 1:12 of MAHACA’s Beau Haugen in the championship.

Marthaler also moved up a weight class after winning 121 last year and continued to dominate. He pinned Worthington’s Christian Dailey in 1:16, won by 6-0 technical fall over United’s Grayson Olson, and capped off the title run with an 8-5 sudden victory over New Ulm Area’s Kane Johnson.

Coequyt was a first-time section champion in 107. After earning a win by fall in 3:00 against MAHACA’s Will Haugen in 107, Coequyt earned a 9-6 decision over New Ulm Area’s Regan Johnson in the semis and an 8-5 decision over United’s Eli Olson in the finals.

Schaefer was a 215 runner-up last year but got over the hump with an individual championship this season. He won by 2:18 fall against Martin County’s Ivan Martin to start his tournament run and, after a 16-1 technical fall over New London-Spicer’s Garrett Leenstra, Schaefer clinched his championship with an 11-2 major decision over Jamisen Frederickson of New Ulm.

While Mattison wasn’t able to repeat as section champion in 189, he was able to finish as runner-up to return to the state tournament.

Mattison won by fall in 1:06 over NLS’ Matthew Gehrke and advanced to the championship with a 313-0 major decision over MAHACA’s Connor Olson. While Worthington’s Chase Byrne defeated Mattison by 15-3 major decision, Mattison redeemed himself with a 4:51 pin of New Ulm’s Lane Ruch to secure his individual state berth.

Brayden Chandler finished as the 160 runner-up, marking his return to the state meet after being the section runner-up in 152 last year. Chandler defeated United’s Tedy Bothun and New Ulm’s Dirk Haynes by pins in 1:02 and 3:45 respectively before falling to Hutchinson’s Luke Hoag by technical fall, 17-0.

While VanMeveren fell in 1:51 to Kyler Haugen in the heavyweight quarterfinals, VanMeveren was flawless from there. He began his redemption arc pins of NLS’ Payton Meis and New Ulm’s Emerson Johnson in 4:38 and 3:29, advancing himself out of the consolation bracket into the third-place match.

His run continued with a pin of United’s Karson Gariepy in 3:53 and finished with a 1:55 pin of Martin County’s David Miller to earn his state tournament berth.

Josh Kraft and Tyson Louwagie each finished just shy of a state tournament berth with third-place finishes in 172 and 145. Drew Chandler also placed fifth in 152 while Dawson DeCamp placed sixth in 139.

United’s Ben Gunlogson returns to state with a first-place finish in 139 a year after finishing as the 127 runner-up while Eli Olson and Kameron Sather will advance to state with runner-up finishes in 107 and 152.

Marshall starts its team state tournament run at 11 a.m. at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul on Thursday, and the individual state tournament will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and continue into Saturday.

Starting at $4.38/week.
