YME falls in overtime in Section 3A play-in

CLARA CITY – The No. 9 Yellow Medicine East boys basketball team overcame a 13-point halftime deficit and forced the game into overtime, but fell just short to No. 8 MACCRAY 76-68 in the North Section 3A play-in game Thursday night, ending its season.

Four Sting players finished in double-figures, led by Wakinyan GreyCloud’s 16 points and five steals. Gunnar Fagen followed with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting from the field, while Gavin Torvik tallied 11 and Jacob Peterson finished with 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds alongside Cooper McCosh.

Fagen and GreyCloud each grabbed six rebounds on the night as well.

YME faced a 41-28 deficit at halftime, but put up a fight and outshot MACCRAY 34-21 throughout the second half to bring the game to overtime.

After continuing to trade baskets for the start of the extra period, the Wolverines’ found the strength to finish the game off, outshooting the Sting 14-6 in overtime.

YME shot 39% from the field and limited MACCRAY to 34%. The biggest difference was the Wolverines’ 49 rebounds to the Stings’ 35.

YME finishes its season 3-23, with its wins coming over Canby on Dec. 6 75-61, over Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 86-51 on Dec. 27 and recently over Lakeview 82-81 on Feb. 18.

The Sting graduates seniors Kian Christianson, Peterson, Brady Dahlager and Eric Jimenez.

A/E 60, RRC 46

ADRIAN – Henry Stavnes had a big offensive night with 26 points behind six 3-pointers, but the No. 9 Red Rock Central boys basketball team fell to No. 9 Adrian-Ellsworth 60-46 in the South Section 3A play-in game Thursday night, bringing its season to a close.

Stavnes also had five rebounds, while Carter Therkilsen had a team-high nine rebounds to his 5 points.

The Falcons end their season 3-24 overall, with its trio of wins coming over Yellow Medicine East 69-53 on Dec. 20, over A/E 44-41 on Jan. 9 and with a 64-53 defeat over Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda on Jan. 28.

RRC graduates seniors Erick Flores, Mason Huffman and Travis Rogers. The program will return most of its young roster come next year.
