Zick’s two-way efforts lead TMB past YME

GRANITE FALLS — Griffin Zick scored an efficient 19 points for the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team on Friday night as the Panthers’ well-balanced offense claimed a 96-62 road win over Yellow Medicine East.
The victory completes a season sweep for the Panthers, who also defeated YME 91-53 back on Dec. 17.
Zick’s 19 points came on 8 of 11 shooting from the field and 3 of 5 shooting from 3-point range. His three assists were also second only to Noah Knakmuh’s four and Alex Munson’s seven, each of whom turned the ball over once.
Knakmuhs spaced the floor with red-hot shooting from 3-point range, shooting 5 of 8 from beyond the arc for 17 points. Trevor Smith was the Panthers’ leading scorer with 20 points on 9 of 12 shooting while Munson added another 15 points on 3 of 5 shooting from 3-point range and 6 of 10 shooting from the field.
Wakinyan GreyCloud was the Sting’s leading scorer with 23 points on 8 of 14 shooting and four 3-pointers while Jacob Peterson added another 16 points on 7 of 14 shooting. GreyCloud’s four assists also tied Brady Dahlager for a team-high.
TMB outrebounded YME 32-18 on the night, led by Aidan Swenhaugen’s five offensive rebounds and Munson’s six total rebounds.
Zick and Munson logged four and three steals respectively.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (20-4) looks to extend its win streak to nine games when it opens its two-game homestand to close out the regular season against Renville County West (16-6) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. From there, the Panthers will host No. 8 Springfield (22-2) for their finale on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
The Panthers blew out RCW 80-37 when the teams went head-to-head on Jan. 7.
Yellow Medicine East (2-22) heads to Cottonwood for its regular-season finale, taking on Lakeview (9-14) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Lakeview beat out YME 74-55 back on Jan. 7.
No. 7 HBC 69, RTR 47
TYLER — The No. 9 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team couldn’t salvage a split against the No. 7 Hills-Beaver Creek Patriots on Friday night. After falling 62-52 to HBC on Jan. 3, the Knights lost Friday’s rematch 69-47.
Colten Thomsen led the Knights with 12 points in the game, Chase Christianson added another 10 and Sean Griesse and Luke Schreurs each tallied another 8.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (19-4) hits the road on Tuesday for a matchup against Red Rock Central (3-20) in Lamberton at 7:30 p.m. RTR defeated the Falcons 86-51 when the teams last met on Jan. 14.
Lakeview 88, Canby 77
COTTONWOOD — Carson Boe’s big night from 3-point range set the stage for the Lakeview boys basketball team to take down Canby on Friday night by a final score of 88-77. The win is the Lakers’ second this season over the Lancers after they picked up a 69-49 win on Dec. 17.
Boe was the Lakers’ leading scorer with 20 points in the game, including three first-half 3-pointers. Braylon Breyfogle also added 19 points while Cody Helmke added another 14.
Cayden Anderson was the game’s leading scorer, accounting for 23 points for the Lancers on 9 of 14 shooting. Jace Rangaard added another 19 points on 7 of 8 shooting while Jack Abrahamson and Owen Peterson each contributed another 14.
Helmke helmed the Lakers’ efforts on the glass with seven rebounds, including six on the offensive end, while Breyfogle and Trevor Tusberg each grabbed another six. Breyfogle also dished out a game-high six assists and his two steals tied him with Boe for second on his team to Tusberg and Dylan Caron’s three.
Anderson was the game’s leading rebounder with 13 boards while Rangaard added another seven. Anderson’s five assists were also a team-high.
Canby (1-21) hosts Minneota (10-13) for its final regular-season home game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., with Minneota claiming the teams’ last matchup 86-74 on Jan. 7.
Lakeview (9-14) remains on its home court for its regular-season finale, hosting Yellow Medicine East (2-22) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Lakeview took home the win when the teams last met by a final score of 74-55.
Minneota 79, RCW 54
RENVILLE — After dropping its previous matchup against Renville County West by a narrow margin of 75-72 earlier in the season, the Minneota boys basketball team came back with a vengeance on Friday. Easton Johnston scored a team-high 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from beyond the arc to lead the Vikings to a 79-54 statement win over the Jaguars.
In addition to Johnston, Lucas Rybinski added another 17 points on 7 of 15 shooting while Leo Hennen and Lincoln Jerzak chipped in 15 and 10 points respectively.
The Vikings also dominated the glass in the win, outrebounding RCW 46-36 overall and 19-11 on the offensive glass. Hunter Carstensen’s six offensive rebounds were a team-high while Rybinski led the team with nine total rebounds.
As a facilitator, Rybinski dished out six assists, and his four steals tied Jerzak for a team-high.
Minneota (10-13) returns to its home court to host Southwest Minnesota Christian (12-8) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
MCC 81, Adrian-Ellsworth 40
SLAYTON — Gavin Gillette put forth an electric two-way effort for the Murray County Central boys basketball team on Friday night as the Rebels beat down Adrian-Ellsworth by a final score of 81-40.
Gillette’s 16 points on 5 of 12 shooting were good for second on the team and, on the defensive end, he logged a team-high seven steals. He was also one of two Rebels with a block, along with Aidan Swenson.
Max Miller was the focal point of MCC’s offense in the game, scoring 18 points on 6 of 9 shooting from 3-point range. Swenson and Tristan Behrends added 12 and 10 respectively.
Carter Hanson distributed five assists with just one turnover while Swenson led MCC’s rebounding efforts with seven boards.
Murray County Central (14-9) hosts Southwest Minnesota Christian (13-8) for its penultimate home game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. The Eagles defeated the Rebels 76-62 when the two last faced off on Jan. 14.
No. 2 Dawson-Boyd 58, CMC 49
PRINSBURG — While the No. 2 Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team struggled offensively by its own lofty standards on Friday night, the Blackjacks still found a way to pull out a win over Central Minnesota Christian. Despite facing a rare halftime deficit of 28-27, the Blackjacks rallied after the break for a 58-49 win.
Gunner Liebl led the Blackjacks with 17 points on 7 of 14 shooting while Brayson Boike added another 14 points on 4 of 8 shooting. Boike also went 6 of 12 from the free-throw line.
Drew Hjelmeland dished out a game-high five assists with 7 points while Boike added another four assists. The duo of Blackjack bigs also led the team on the glass with nine rebounds for Hjelmeland and seven for Boike, tying him with Carson Stratmoen.
Hjelmeland logged a pair of blocks and a pair of steals in the win while Boike added three steals and a block.
Dawson-Boyd (19-3) ends its season with a three-game homestand, starting against Pipestone Area (9-13) on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
WWG 79, Edgerton 71
WESTBROOK — Four scorers finished in double figures for the Westbrook-Walnut Grove boys basketball team as they edged past Edgerton by a final score of 79-71 on Friday night. The win completes a season sweep for the Chargers, who also defeated the Dutchmen 69-60 on Jan. 3.
Hudsen Jenniges caught fire for the Chargers in the second half, where he scored 16 of his game-high 24 points to help overcome a 43-39 halftime deficit.
While Jenniges got hot late, Drew Swanson gave the Chargers an early spark with a trio of first-half 3-pointers to head into the break with 13 points. He finished the night second on the team with 19 while Kyle Curry and Jackson Jenniges chipped in 16 and 12 respectively. Neil Kuehl was WWG’s lone other scorer on the night, tallying 8 points.
Westbrook-Walnut Grove (15-8) goes on the road to take on Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey (4-19) for its next game on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
MLAC 74, RRC 59
LAMBERTON — A quality scoring performance from Henry Stavnes still left the Red Rock Central boys basketball team shy of a win on Friday night, with the Falcons falling 74-59 to Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey.
RRC led 31-26 at halftime, but couldn’t slow down the Wolverine offense in the second half.
Stavnes scored 21 points for the Falcons while Carter Therkilsen and Abe Stavnes each added another 12.
Red Rock Central (3-20) hosts the No. 9 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights (19-4) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., with the Knights taking down the Falcons 86-51 earlier this season.
