Bri Stoltzman named NSIC Player of the Year
BURNSVILLE — Solidifying her standout season playing a key role in the Southwest Minnesota State University women’s team successful run, senior Bri Stoltzman has been named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Player of the Year, released Thursday morning. She also was named to the All-NSIC first team, alongside Audrey Swanson, and Peyton Blandin earned an All-NSIC second team honor.
Stoltzman, a guard out of Mankato West High School, is the third SMSU womens basketball player to earn the Player of the Year honor, and is the first since Michelle Bruns in 2005.
The Mustangs finished the regular season 25-3 overall, 19-3 in conference play, including a 17-game win streak.
Stoltzman leads SMSU in scoring with an average of 21.4 points, 4.2 assists and two steals a game. She also ranks third on the team in rebounding (6.4), and has scored 20 or more points in 16 games this season, including four 30-plus outings.
The R/A Facility witnessed history from Stoltzman on Jan. 17, when she scored a new-career high 41 points against Northern State, which tied for first in the league and third in the nation for points in a single game.
In conference play, Stoltzman ranks second in scoring and third in assists, and she has tied the SMSU single-season scoring record with 579 points, which she originally set herself last year.
Also joining elite company, Stoltzman has been named the NSIC Player of the Week seven times this season, which only three other NSIC players have gathered six or more of the honors in one season over the last 20 years.
Now earning the top honor in her final collegiate season, Stoltzman made her way up after being named to the All-NSIC first team last season, and she made the second team in her sophomore campaign.
Swanson, a junior forward from Waconia, was named to the first team after being SMSU and the NSIC’s leading rebounder with 9.4 a game, 9.8 in conference. She also ranks second for the Mustangs in scoring (15.2) and steals (1.3). During the regular season, she grabbed 204 defensive rebounds, now ranking first in SMSU history for most in a single season.
Swanson has also tallied 13 double-doubles this season.
Blandin, a senior guard from Farmington, made the second team as SMSU’s leading 3-point shooter, with 64 on the season so far. She also ranks second in assists (1.9) and third in scoring, with 14.9 points a game. She’s scored in double figures in 25 outings this season.
Blandin also ranks third in the NSIC with 2.5 3-pointers a game.
SMSU received the two-seed for the NSIC Tournament beginning on Saturday, and will play No. 7 Minnesota State University Moorhead in the quarterfinals at 1:30 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.
