Mustang golf takes seventh place at SMSU Classic
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State womens golf team dropped three spots to seventh place on the second and final day of the SMSU Classic on Tuesday night. After shooting 40-over on Monday, the Mustangs shot 58-over on Tuesday to finish tied with Minot State for eighth out of 13 teams at 86-over.
Westminster (Utah) won the tournament with a two-day score of 78-over, followed by Minnesota State at 80-over and Metropolitan State University of Denver at 81-over.
Aside from the Mustangs and Beavers, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference’s Minnesota Crookston and UMary als participated in the tournament. The Golden Eagles placed 11th at 103-over and the Marauders placed last at 112-over.
Senior Danielle Podoll led all SMSU golfers with a two-day total of 20-over to tie for 13th with Minot State’s Lauryn Keller and Holly Knudsen, UMary’s Carrie Carmichael and Northwest Nazarene’s Tora Timinsky.
Podoll shot a 9-over on Monday before shooting an 11-over on Tuesday. She had a birdie on her second hole of the final round but shot 7-over on the back 9.
Minnesota Crookston’sAnaka Lysne won the individual event title with a two-day score of 13-over while Minnesota State’s Kelly Winter took second at 16-over. The two entered the day in fourth and 13th respectively, but each shot 7-over to shoot up the leaderboard on the final day.
Mesa Community College’s Kasey Reichard entered the second day of play in first place after shooting 4-over, but her 20-over day-2 score dropped her down to 27th.
Mallory Uselman was SMSU’s No. 2 scorer in 41st place while Berkley Steffen was right behind her in 45th. Uselman moved up four spots after her 14-over round on Tuesday brought her to 27-over for the tournament, while Steffen dropped 23 spots by following her 10-over Monday round with an 18-over on Tuesday.
Uselman recorded a pair of birdies on the front 9.
Isabella Jacobs rounded out the SMSU scorers in 55th place at 31-over while Meghan Pundsack placed 57th at 32-over.
The Mustangs will next compete at the Augustana Invitational at Elmwood Golf Course in Sioux Falls, S.D. on April 7 and 8. The tournament will be the Mustangs’ last before the NSIC Championship at Outlaw Course in Smithville, Mo. from April 25 to 27.
