Mustangs comeback for 4-3 win over Minot State
TUSCON, Ariz. — The Southwest Minnesota State University mens baseball team rallied back from a three-run deficit to come away with the 4-3 win over Minot State University in a non-conference game to finish off the Tucson Invitation Wednesday afternoon in Arizona. The win marks four straight for the Mustangs.
The Beavers brought in three unanswered runs to begin the game, two coming in the second inning. But, SMSU was able to bring the score within one in the top of the third inning.
Levi Lampert started the inning off with a double to right field, and Henry Hammrich followed that up with a homerun over left center field to bring in two runs.
Chuck Hackett was walked after, but the inning came to a close with Tyler Froland striking out and Minot State securing a double-play with getting both Hackett and Cory Bantam out at second and first base.
The fourth inning was scoreless for the two teams, but SMSU put itself on top with one run each in the fifth and sixth inning, and held the Beavers from reaching home plate the rest of the way.
The Mustangs tied the score up 3-3 with a double from Hackett to start the top of the fifth inning, who was brought home by a Bantam single to right field.
With two outs in the top of the sixth, Eli Gibbs was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch. Brock Woitalla singled, advancing Gibbs to second base.
Two runners later, Woitalla and Gibbs stole third and second base, which put SMSU in good position to take the lead as Gibbs was able to run home off a wild pitch moments later.
Minot State finished the final out to prevent Woitalla from getting home, but the Mustangs hung on to do the same on defense.
Hammrich led SMSU with his two RBI’s, while Bantam finished with a pair of hits.
Jerod Cyrus got his first win of the season on the mound for the Mustangs, pitching 6 1/3 innings. He had two hits and no earned runs allowed with two strikeouts. Owen Latendresse was the starting pitcher, but was relieved after three earned runs. He also threw one strikeout.
The Beavers went through four pitchers, with Griffin Shearon on the mound the longest for 3 2/3 innings. He allowed two earned runs and had two strikeouts.
SMSU will look to keep building on its momentum when it faces St. Cloud State University in a weekend series of four conference games at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. All games are slated for 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
