SMSU mens, womens hoops headed to DII tourney

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University mens and womens basketball teams both heard their names called on Selection Sunday. The mens team earned its second consecutive Division II National Tournament selection with the No. 6 seed in the Central Region, while the womens team earned the No. 7 seed in its third-ever tournament appearance.

The SMSU womens team’s two other appearances came back-to-back in 2001 and 2002, with the Mustangs winning their first two matchups before falling to South Dakota State in the North Region Championship. The Mustang mens’ last appearance ended with a loss to Northwest Missouri State in the 2024 region quarterfinals.

On the mens side, Wasburn University earned the top seed in the region and the right ot host the region tournament at Lee Arena in Topeka, Kan.

For the women, the top seed went to Pittsburg State University, who will host the regional at John Lance Arena in Pittsburg, Kan.

The SMSU mens team will take on third-seeded Winona State in the region quarterfinals on March 15, with game time set for noon. The meeting will be the fourth this season between the Mustangs and Warriors, with Winona State claiming two of the three meetings including a 70-61 victory over SMSU in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference quarterfinals.

The game also marks the second time SMSU and Winona State have met in the NCAA Tournament, with SMSU opening its 2001 run with an 88-77 win over the Warriors.

On the womens side, SMSU will take on second-seeded Concordia-St. Paul, with the regional quarterfinal matchup slated for Friday at 2:30 p.m. It will be SMSU’s second matchup of the year against the Golden Bears, who defeated the Mustangs 72-58 on Dec. 7.

SMSU’s 26-4 record on the womens side sets a program record for single-season wins. On the mens side, the Mustangs went 21-8.
