SMSU softball pushes win streak to six with sweep

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team extended its winning streak to six straight with a doubleheader sweep over the College of Staten Island (N.Y.) on Tuesday played at Legends Way Fields during THE Spring Games.

SMSU used a five-hit shutout from Karlie Miller to win 7-0 in the opener before scoring eight runs in the fifth inning to rally for an 11-4 win in game two.

SMSU’s win streak pushes its record to 7-7 overall and is the program’s longest streak since winning six in a row during the 2021 season.

In game one, Miller (4-3) recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts in notching her first shutout of the season and the sixth of her career. She walked five and hit one batter, while scattering five hits.

SMSU scored all the runs it would need for Miller in the top of the first inning with Abby Boxrud scoring on an error before Brynn Webber came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single to make the score 3-0.

The lead moved to 4-0 in the third with Abby Russell sprinting around the bases for an inside-the-park home run. It’s the second career inside-the-park home run in her career with the first coming on March 7, 2022, also in Florida versus Bloomfield.

SMSU added to the lead in the fifth loading the bases with one out singles from Boxrud, Russell and Emma Humpal, before Jordyn Marsh brought home Boxrud on an RBI ground out to push the margin to 5-0.

The Mustangs added insurance runs in the seventh with Miller helping her own cause with a two-out, two-run single to plate Peyton Verdon and Humpal.

SMSU closed the opener with nine hits as Boxrud, Russell and Humpal each collected two hits and scored a pair of runs. Webber and Miller each finished with one hit and two RBIs, while Riley Kramolisch added a base hit.

In game two, the Dolphins (5-3) struck for four runs, on two hits and four walks in the top of the first to build a 4-0 lead.

SMSU had a big answer in the home half of the first with Boxrud, Russell and Humpal smacking base hits to load the bases before Paris Van Dyke plated the first run with a run-scoring base hit. Webber followed with the team’s fifth straight, a two-run single, that cut the deficit to 4-3.

The score remained 4-3 until the Mustangs broke through with a huge fifth inning. Humpal started the rally with a triple and scored moments later on an RBI single by Van Dyke. After a walk to Webber put runners on first and second, Lexi Ingalls came through with an RBI single to give SMSU its first lead of the game at 5-4. Moments later, Kaylee Hafermann made the score 6-4 laying down an RBI bunt single to score Webber. Boxrud and Russell would later add back-to-back bases loaded walks to extend the margin to 8-4 before Humpal drilled a two-run single up the middle to make the score 10-4. SMSU added its final run of the game on a wild pitch to score Russell.

Morgyn Otte (2-2), who came on to pitch with one out in the first, shut down the Dolphins the rest of the way allowing nine hits with no walks, while striking out three.

SMSU collected a season-high 15 hits with Van Dyke and Humpal both finishing with a career-high three hits. Ingalls, Boxrud and Russell each closed the victory with two hits each.

SMSU is off on Wednesday before returning to the diamond on Thursday taking on West Virginia Wesleyan at 8 a.m. CST and Salem University (W. Va.) at 10:15 a.m. CST at Legends Way Fields.
