C/M places 8th at SDSU’s Scott Underwood Invite

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Canby/Minneota girls track and field team led area participants with an eighth-place finish at the Scott Underwood Invitational at South Dakota State University in Brookings on Monday. The Lancers scored 31 points in the 23-team event, while Lakeview placed 18th with 9 points. On the boys side, Lakeview placed 16th with 6 points while Canby/Minneota tied for 23rd out of 25 teams with 2 points. 

Sioux Falls Christian won both sides of the meet, finishing the girls side with 138.5 and the boys with 95. Spirit Lake was also the runner-up on both sides, falling 0.5 points back of Sioux Falls Christian on the boys side and tallying 78 points on the girls. Brookings’ 72.25 and Lennox’s 59 points were good for third on the boys and girls sides, respectively.

Canby/Minneota’s strongest girls finishes came in the 4×200-meter relay and the 4×800-meter relay, claiming third place in each event. Natalie Stoks, Karlie Wollum, Brynn Kockelman and Taylor Ourada ran a time of 52.67 in the 4×200, while Rachel Jelen, Lillie Wollum, Mya Pesek and Stoks clocked in at 10:30.05 in the 4×800. 

Lakeview’s Brook Gunlogson had the best individual performance among area athletes on the day, placing fourth in the 200 meters at 27.36 seconds. It was one of two top-10 individual finishes for her, as she also placed ninth in the 100-meter dash at 13.18.

Jackson Staab also had the top individual boys finish, placing fourth for Lakeview in the shot put at 15.28 meters.

Canby/Minneota and Lakeview will both compete on Thursday in Cottonwood. The Lakeview-hosted meet will also feature BOLD, Central Minnesota Christian, Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd, MACCRAY/Renville County West, Murray County Central, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, Westbrook-Walnut Grove/Red Rock Central and Yellow Medicine East. Field events are slated to start at 3:30 p.m. while running events will begin at 4:15.
