Lakers look for fourth straight state bid

COTTONWOOD — The Lakeview boys golf team is on a quest for its fourth straight team bid into the Class A state tournament, led by seniors Carson Boe and Lane Arends, who had competitive showings last year.

The boys team graduated two golfers from its state team last year in Kyle Kurowski and Kyran Nueman, but return Boe, Arends, Landon Teske and Trevor Tusberg.

“My expectation is that I hope we can bring the team to state again. We have two very strong leaders [Boe and Arends], and I know they’re looking for the chance to be able to place individually at state as well,” Lakeview head coach Sarah Schultz said. “It’d be fun for the team to be able to go back and try to place at state as well.”

The girls team has five returners from last season, including sophomore Lauren Boe, who was Lakeview’s lowest scorer in last season’s section championship with a 224 to earn 13th.

Senior Caitlynn Hedman is also back for her final season, who’s been with the team since eighth grade, and leads with the most varsity experience for the group.

“I think last year, they [girl’s team] played in all the varsity meets and got to experience what it is to play like 18-hole meets, and then go to section, which they had never done before,” Schultz said. “I think now that they’ve experienced that, those nerves aren’t quite as bad as they were, so they feel comfortable and know what to expect.”

On the boys side, Carson finished as last year’s Class A individual runner-up with a 142, just behind Walker-Hackensack-Akeley’s Parker Brock with a 140. Lane Arends placed 22nd with a 160.

The two also carried the section tournament for Lakeview, with Carson winning the section after carding a 142, and Arends earning fourth place with a 164.

Lakeview has recently built up a standard to make the state tournament, and perform well. The Lakers have made the tournament the past three years consecutively.

As a team, Lakeview finished eighth overall at the state tournament last year. The Blackjacks edged out the Lakers 695-701. Fertile-Beltrami won Class A with 627.

Lakeview was crowned state champions in 2023 with a 636, and finished fourth in 2022 with 682.

Both teams have recently started their season, and the girls team competed at the Marshall Invitational on Tuesday and hosted a meet on Thursday.

In Marshall, the Lakers finished in eighth place of eight scored teams with a 443.

Lauren had the low-score, shooting a 28-over 100, and placed 15th of 47 individual golfers. Jersey Stensrud followed in 27th with a 39-over 111.

At its home meet, Lakeview did not have enough qualifying golfers to field a team score.

Lauren and Hedman finished the day tied for 13th of 20 golfers, sharing a 33-over 105.

The boys team also competed at the Marshall Invitational on Wednesday, and went to Minneota on Thursday.

In Marshall, Lakeview took second place as a team with a 317, behind Marshall’s 296 finish.

Carson and Arends had strong performances, finishing second and third place individually with a 70 and 72, to Marshall’s Luke Ehlers’ 69.

Lakeview tied for second place at the Minneota meet with Lac qui Parle Valley with a 33-over 321.

Carson finished as the top golfer out of 48, carding an 8-under 64 with two birdies.

Schultz said she feels like both teams have had a good start to the season, and expects to continue seeing improvement through practice and consistency.

Lakeview will return to the green at Minneota today at 4:30 p.m. and on April 28 at Ortonville Municipal Golf Course at 10:30 a.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
