Marshall sweeps first home golf tournament

MARSHALL — The Marshall boys and girls golf team each opened the season up with a first-place finish at the Marshall Invitational on Saturday, with Luke Ehlers and Dayton Webskowski earning top individual placements in their respective meets.

The boys team finished with 308 strokes to win the meet, 10 ahead of New Ulm’s 318. Minnewaska Area, Fergus Falls and Fairmont also competed in the invitational.

Ehlers finished with a meet-best 1-under 71, including birdies on holes 1, 2, 14, 15 and 17. He beat out New Ulm’s Mason Buegler by a stroke, who finished with 72.

Marshall’s Deacon Wing also earned a top-5 individual finish with a team-second best 5-over 77, with birdies on holes 7, 14 and 16.

Keegan Fossum took seventh place with 6-over-78 with a pair of birdies, and Jaylen Koster took eighth to round out the Tigers’ top-10 individuals. Koster shot a 9-over-81.

On the girls side, Marshall took first place with a 366 team score, plenty ahead of Fairmont’s runner-up 390 finish. New Ulm did not field a team score.

The Tigers had six golfers place in the top-10 individually, led by Webskowski’s 10-over 82, with a birdie on hole five. Fairmont’s Katherine Zelaya followed behind with a 17-over 89.

Isabella Gossen placed third with a 19-over 91 outing, while Ali Pederson followed closely in fourth with a 93.

Also competing well, Grace Rokeh finished with a 28-over 100 for seventh place, Maddi Panka shot a 101 and Anna Thor finished the day in 10th with a 109.

Both teams will look to continue building on the good start to the season in their next meets. The girls team will hit the green today with another home meet at the Marshall Golf Club beginning at 1 p.m., hosting Dawson-Boyd, BOLD and Murray County Central.

The boys will return to the course on Wednesday with a home meet that was postponed from Monday, with a 12 p.m. start. The Tigers will host 13 other teams, including Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, Minneota, Canby, Dawson-Boyd, Lakeview, Murray County Central, Yellow Medicine East and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
