MCC places first at Worthington girls invite

WORTHINGTON — The Murray County Central Rebels edged out Fairmont by 8 strokes for a win at the Worthington Girls Golf Invitational at Great Life Golf and Fitness on Friday. Ava Johnson led the Rebels with a first-place finish with 86 strokes while Rachael Huso also shot a 98 to place fifth.

As a team, MCC compiled a score of 416 to beat out Fairmont’s 424 and Worthington’s 425. 

Lakeview also placed fourth out of seven scoring teams in the event at 442. Minneota and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton also sent golfers to the event but did not field a team score.

Johnson’s low day came on four pars — two on the front nine, two on the back nine — and a birdie on hole 12. Huso also recorded a par on hole 10.

Johnson beat out individual runner-up Peyton Sachs of Lac qui Parle Valley by three strokes. Vivian Brockberg of Pipestone and Claire Meyer of Worthington placed third and fourth at 94 and 97.

Natalie Einck and Lizzie Daniels rounded out the MCC scorers. Einck carded a 114 to place 19th while Daniels placed 26th in the 45-golfer event at 118.

Lauren Boe led Lakeview’s fourth-place finish by tying Minneota’s Ava Panka for eighth place at 102. Boe had a pair of front-nine pars and another on the back nine, while Panka had two pars on the back nine.

Cydney Manning also placed 12th at 108 for Lakeview. Jersey Stensrud shot an 111 to tie Worthington’s Ava Schultz and Callie Rosenberg for 16th while Jovie Benson was Lakeview’s No. 4 scorer in 28th place at 121.

Tracy-Milroy-Balaton’s Taylor Munson tied Worthington’s Claire Mahlberg for 10th place at 106.

Minneota, Lakeview, and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton will next compete on Thursday, along with Canby, Renville County West and Yellow Medicine East, at Granite Run Golf Course at 4:30 p.m.

Murray County Central will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to Pipestone Country Club at 3:15 p.m.

HLOF/WWG 176, HBC 193

FULDA — Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda/Westbrook-Walnut Grove won its boys golf dual against Hills-Beaver Creek by a score of 176-193 on Friday. Neil Kuehl led the Coyotes with an individual first-place finish, shooting a 2-over 38. He scored a par on seven of the nine holes.

Hills-beaver Creek’s Cameron Allen took second place at 6-over 42, but HLOF/WWG took each of the next five spots.

Mason Omen and Brady Madison placed third and fourth at 45 and 46, while Connor Jackels placed fifth at 47. Dominic Lee and Kellen Hollahan also tied for sixth with 48 strokes each.

Omen and Madison each had a pair of pars on the day.

On the girls side, Ava Herding placed second out of three golfers by shooting a 62. Hills-Beaver Creek’s Abigayl Olson placed first at 57.

The HLOF/WWG boys golf team will next compete at the Worthington Boys Trojan Invite at Great Life Golf & Fitness on Friday at 1 p.m.
