RTR staves off LQPV’s late rally for 11-9 victory

RUTHTON — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton baseball team survived a total of nine Lac qui Parle Valley runs in the fifth and sixth innings on Friday night to hold on for an 11-9 non-conference win.

Sean Griesse led the Knights at the plate with a triple, two doubles and two RBIs. Eli Determan also had a double and a single while Seth Cowell and Chase Christianson each singled twice.

RTR led 7-0 through the game’s first four innings when LQPV got on the board in the fifth with an RBI double from Brock Bjornjeld and another two runs scored when Matthew Arndt reached on an error. The Knights responded with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, courtesy of Christianson hitting an RBI single and scoring on a passed ball, and Kolby Louwagie scoring on a wild pitch.

Still, LQPV further endangered RTR’s seven-run cushion with six runs on five walks, three hit batters and a single in the top of the sixth. Yet, Determan doubled and scored on a Drew Chandler fly out in the bottom of the frame. In the top of the seventh, Chandler retired three of the four batters he faced to seal the game.

Chandler pitched 1 1/3 innings to earn the save, allowing one hit and one walk with a strikeout. Louwagie allowed one earned and one unearned run in his 4 1/3-inning start, striking out seven batters while allowing six walks and a pair of hits, while Elton allowed six earned runs on two hits and four walks over 1 1/3 frames.

Griesse gave RTR the lead in the bottom of the first when he hit a triple and scored on a wild pitch.

In the second inning, RTR established its lead with six runs in the frame. Cowell singled, Tyler Wichmann was hit by a pitch and Christianson walked to load the bases. RTR took advantage from there, with Louwagie and Gavin Schreurs drawing walks to force in a pair of runs and a wild pitch allowing Christianson to score.

Griesse and Determan finished off the rally with consecutive doubles, Griesse’s generating two RBIs and Determan accounting for one.

Russell-Tyler-Ruthton remains undefeated at 6-0 with the win and will look to remain undefeated when it goes on the road to take on Dawson-Boyd on Saturday at 1 p.m.

MCC 14, TMB 2 (5 inn.)

SLAYTON — The Murray County Central baseball team exploded for nine runs in the second inning of its Friday night non-conference game against Tracy-Milroy-Balaton. The Rebels built on a big day from Dylan Kluis at the plate and on the mound to claim a 14-2 win in five innings.

Kluis finished the game with three hits, including a triple, and three RBIs at the plate. As a pitcher, he went the distance while giving up two earned runs on four hits and five walks. He also struck out six batters.

MCC’s game-defining second inning started when Carson Lewis was hit by the first pitch and scored on a Cayden Veldhuisen double to make the score 3-0. A walk to Tristan Behrends and a single by Teague Meyer loaded up the bases, and Gavin Gillette was hit by a pitch to drive in one run and Kluis singled to drive in another pair.

The onslaught continued as Krew Schneider drove in one run on a groundout. Dugan Kluis and Lewis walked consecutively, with Dylan scoring on a passed ball, and Gabe Tentinger, Veldhuisen and Behrends singled consecutively to drive in another pair of runs for an 11-0 lead.

Noah Knakmuhs was charged with the loss for TMB, allowing 13 earned runs on 12 hits over 2 1/3 innings of work. Griffin Zick tossed 1 2/3 frames of scoreless relief, striking out three batters while allowing a pair of hits.

TMB trailed 14-0 heading into the fifth and needed five runs to extend the game. With two outs, Taylor Squires walked, Connor Lanoue singled and Trevor Smith walked to load the bases. Knakmuhs capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run single but a fly out ended the game via mercy rule.

Knakmuhs recorded a team-high two hits with two RBIs for the Panthers while Zick and Lanoue’s singles accounted for the only other hits for the Panthers.

MCC first claimed the lead in the bottom of the first. Meyer led off the inning with a double and scored on a Dylan Kluis single. Krew Schneider then grounded out to score Kluis for a 2-0 lead.

MCC added a trio of insurance runs in the bottom of the third. Gillette led off the frame with a single, and Dylan Kluis and Schneider each drove in a run on a triple and a double, respectively. Lewis then singled to put runners on the corners and prompt TMB’s pitching change, and Tentinger singled to push the inning’s third run across the plate for a 14-0 MCC edge.

MCC improves to 4-0 with the win and will look to pick up its fifth straight victory to start the season when it hosts Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda (1-1) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

TMB falls to 1-3 on the year and will look to find its rhythm when it hosts Adrian/Ellsworth (1-2) today at 2 p.m.

Wabasso 5, Canby 3

CANBY — A valiant seventh-inning rally by the Canby baseball team fell short on Friday night against Wabasso. The Lancers brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but a strikeout left Canby with a 5-3 non-conference loss.

Wabasso retired each of the first two batters of the seventh inning before Cash Antony walked and scored on a Jace Sigler double. Bryant Hansen came to the plate, but Calvin Hanna came up with the five-pitch strikeout to seal the victory and earn the save.

Hanna pitched the game’s final three innings for Wabasso, allowing one earned run on one hit and three walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Zach Skoblik left with a no-decision after pitching the game’s first four innings for Wabasso, surrendering a pair of unearned runs on three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.

The game was tied at 2-2 when heading into the fifth inning. Kaysen Harms and Jayden Remiger hit consecutive singles, but Canby got consecutive outs to nearly get out of the jam. Still, a wild pitch advanced the runners into scoring position and Caden Frerichs came up with a two-run single for a 4-2 Rabbit advantage.

Wabasso finished the day with six hits from six different batters. Harms reached base three times with a single and two walks while Frerichs and Skoblik each drove in a pair of runs. Sigler led Canby offensively with a double, a single and an RBI while Antony also reached base twice with a pair of walks.

Wabasso claimed an early lead when, after singles from Harms and Jaxson Wagner and a Remiger walk, Skoblik hit a two-run single in the first inning. Frerichs walked to reload the bases but two strikeouts and a fly out ended the frame without further damage.

Canby got on the board in the bottom of the frame when Sigler reached on an error and scored on a passed ball. The Lancers went on to tie the game in the fourth when Cody Stoll singled and scored on a passed ball.

Eli Greenman was charged with the loss for Canby, giving up two earned and two unearned runs over 5 1/3 innings. He struck out three batters while allowing five hits and three walks. In relief, Morgen Tol allowed one earned run on a walk and a hit over two innings.

Wabasso added an insurance run in the sixth when Jack Burns singled and scored on a wild pitch.

Wabasso improves to 1-2 with the win and now travels to face Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s (0-2) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Canby falls to 0-2 and now goes on the road to take on Ortonville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Minneota 12,

RRC/WWG 2 (5 inn.)

LAMBERTON — Each of the nine starters for the Minneota baseball team recorded a hit in Friday’s non-conference game against Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove. The Vikings jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and cruised to a 12-2 win in five innings.

Parker Bradley got Minneota on the board first, getting hit by a pitch before eventually scoring on an Eli Gruenes sacrifice in the first inning.

The second inning, however, was when the Vikings’ offense exploded. RRC/WWG retired each of the first two Minneota batters before Destin Fier and Kellen Bradley singled consecutively and both scored on a Parker Bradley single. Brody Larson kept the momentum going with an RBI double and then scored himself on a Ryan Meagher single.

Larson tossed the game’s first three innings for Minneota, allowing one earned run on one hit and five walks with four strikeouts. He also hit three batters.

In relief, Kellen Bradley earned the win by giving up one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts over two innings of relief.

RRC/WWG didn’t score its first run until the fourth inning, when Jonah Skarupa drew a leadoff walk, advanced to third on walks to Jackson Jenniges and Abe Stavnes, and scored on a Jordan Therkilsen ground out.

Hudson Jenniges also led off the fifth inning with a double before scoring on a passed ball. Jenniges reached base in each of his three plate appearances and accounted for two of RRC/WWG’s three hits.

Larson led Minneota with three hits while Meagher and Adam Dalager each added another two.

Minneota’s lead continued to grow when Javers walked to start the third and scored on a Kyson Arndt single.

Minneota sealed the win in the fifth. Kellen Bradley drew a leadoff walk before a fly out and a strikeout put two away. Still, Meagher hit an RBI single, Gruenes was hit by a pitch, and Javers hit a two-run double before scoring on a Dalager single.

Jake Erickson allowed six earned runs on seven hits over two innings for the Falcons, while Jordan Therkilsen allowed six earned runs on six hits over three innings.

Gruenes hit an RBI single to score Larson in the fourth, while Meagher scored on a passed ball.

Minneota improves to 3-0 with the win and next travels to Prinsburg to take on Central Minnesota Christian (0-2) on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Lakeview 6 (5 inn.)

LAMBERTON — Playing its second game of the day against a fresher Lakeview baseball team, the Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove Falcons bounced back resoundingly from their earlier loss to Minneota. The Falcons scored five first-inning runs and another seven in the second inning to claim a 16-6 win in five innings.

Jordan Therkilsen started the Falcons off hot by drawing a leadoff walk, advancing to third on a pair of wild pitches and scoring on a Carter Therkilsen sacrifice fly to center field.

Hudson Jenniges was hit by a pitch and Austin Imker reached on an error at short before Jake Erickson hit a two-run single. Trenton Blomgren followed up with another two-run single before scoring on an error to give the Falcons a 5-0 lead after the first.

Finn Batalden earned the win on the hill for the Falcons, allowing one earned and five unearned runs on seven hits over four innings. In relief, Abe Stavnes threw two scoreless innings while allowing one hit with five strikeouts.

RRC/WWG bolstered its lead in the second. Jordan and Carter Therkilsen were hit by a pitch and walked to start the frame when Lakeview took out starting pitcher Logan Herrick for Jared Louwagie. Still, RRC/WWG persisted. Hudson Jenniges drove in Jordan with a sacrifice fly while Imker drove in Carter with a single.

Jackson Jenniges and Blomgren followed up with another pair of RBI singles and, with two outs, Abe Stavnes drew a walk to force in a run before eventually scoring on a wild pitch. Jordan Therkilsen also hit a double in his second at-bat of the inning to make the score 12-0.

Lakeview answered with two outs and two runners on in the third. Baylon Breyfogle reached base on an error at short by the Falcons, which also allowed Teagan Neuman and Dylan Caron to score.

Easton Schmidt then singled to set the table for a pair of two-run singles by Landyn Listul and Dakota Cowell, cutting RRC/WWG’s lead down to 12-5.

Brooks Smith also reached base on an error to score another unearned run for Lakeview in the fourth inning, bringing the Falcons’ lead down to six runs.

RRC/WWG sealed the deal in the fifth with another three runs. Imker walked before scoring on an Erickson single, and Jackson Jenniges singled to put two runners on when Mason Warner drove in Imker.

Hudson Jenniges scored the clinching run by singling, stealing second and scoring on an Erickson sacrifice fly.

RRC/WWG improves to 2-2 with the win and hosts Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian (1-1) for its next game on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Lakeview falls to 0-3 on the season and looks to return to form when it heads to Raymond on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. for a game against MACCRAY.
