Tiger bats have big day in Belle Plaine
Marshall sweeps Belle Plaine with pair of mercy-rule wins
BELLE PLAINE — The Marshall baseball team’s bats had a big day in Belle Plaine on Saturday. The Marshall Tigers accumulated 21 hits over 12 innings of baseball, defeating the Belle Plaine Tigers 14-4 in six innings in the first game of the Big South Conference doubleheader and 13-1 in six innings in the second.
Marshall improves to 4-0 on the season with the sweep and next hosts St. Peter on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Belle Plaine 1
Marshall led the entirety of its first game against Belle Plaine but broke through for the win with a six-run sixth inning. Andrew Stelter singled and Samuel Thor reached on an error to put two runners on when Liam Kruse hit a two-run triple and scored on a Josh Kraft single to make the score 10-1.
After a Levi Maeyaert walk, Carter Prins singled in Kraft and Chase Alcorn hit a two-run single to make the score 13-1.
Belle Plaine got a leadoff single to start the bottom of the sixth but Miller retired each of the next three batters he faced to end the game. Miller pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with four strikeouts in the relief appearance.
Eli Alcorn earned the win as the starter, striking out 10 batters in four no-hit innings. He walked three and allowed one earned run in the fourth on a balk after walking the first two batters.
Kruse finished with a game-high three RBIs on two hits, including the game’s lone extra-base hit. Stelter also had a pair of singles and a pair of walks in four plate appearances while Kraft and Koster each drove in a pair of runs.
Thor scored the game’s firts run when he singled, stole third after a double play, and scored on an error.
In the second, Maeyaert reached on an error before scoring on a Koster sacrifice fly and JR Vierstraete was hit by a pitch before scoring when Eli Alcorn reached on an error.
A Koster ground out and Mensink reaching on an error scored Kruse and Kraft in the third. An inning later, Eli Alcorn and Stelter singled before scoring on a Kruse fielder’s choice and a Kraft sacrifice fly to give Marshall seven runs before Belle Plaine scored its first.

Belle Plaine scored the game’s first run when Anthony Elbert walked and scored on a Zach Kirchner single, but it was all Marshall from there.
Stelter singled and Thor reached on an error to put runners to runners on when Kruse hit a two-run go-ahead double. Kraft was hit by a pitch before, with one out, Cooper Mensink reached on an error to score Kruse and Deagan Maurice hit a sacrifice fly to score Kraft in the four-run inning.
Owen Kesteloot earned the win on the mound for Marshall, allowing four unearned runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He struck out six batters while walking one.
Marshall scored the clinching runs with one out in the sixth. Eli Weedman drew a leadoff walk before scoring on Maurice triple, and Maurice ended the game by scoring on a Tyson Louwagie double.
Clayton Jones closed the game for Marshall with a scoreless sixth inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced.
The Tigers doubled their run total in the bottom of the second. Eli Alcorn and Stelter hit consecutive doubles to start the inning with a run. Kruse reached on an error with one out when Kraft hit an RBI triple and Vierstraete hit an RBI single to make the score 8-1.
Stelter finished the game with three hits and three runs while Kraft added another pair of hits four four RBIs.
A pair of singles from Stelter and Thor put two runners on with two outs in the third inningwhen Kraft lined an RBI single into left field to score them both.
Maurice and Logan Phillippe reached base on an error and a walk in the fourth, and Maurice scored on a wild pitch and Phillippe scored on a Louwagie sacrifice fly.
After a four-inning drought, Belle Plaine got back on the board with a three-run fifth inning. Jackson Schroeder reached base on an error before scoring on an Elbert double, and another pair of runs scored with two outs on a dropped third strike and an RBI single.
Braxton Koster pitched 2/3 innings of relief, striking out one batter and allowing one hit.
Jack Nagel was charged with the loss after allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits over 2 1/3 innings. Kirchner also gave up five earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts over three innings.
