Tigers’ defensive improvements not enough in loss to St. Peter

ST. PETER — The Marshall softball team fell into an early deficit in a Big South Conference matchup against St. Peter and never was able to climb out. The Saints claimed a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a two-run homer by Auden Anderson and never looked back as Marshall fell 4-2.
Sara Dallman put together Marshall’s best pitching performance of the season in the loss, limiting the Saints to three earned runs on six hits and four walks over five innings. Alissa Moen also pitched a scoreless inning of relief without allowing a baserunner.
Marshall first got on the board in the top of the fifth. Trailing 4-0, Jaylah Morgan walked and Taylor Frana was hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs when Dallman hit an RBI single.
Bailynn Parsons kept the rally going with another RBI single and Justine Kirst was hit by a pitch, loading the bases and putting the tying run in scoring position. Yet, a strikeout ended the rally and no Tigers advanced past second base in the final two innings.
Parsons logged a single, a double and an RBI for the Tigers while Dallman finished with a single, two walks and an RBI.
Anderson led off the fourth inning with her second homer of the day, a solo shot, and a single and a passed ball eventually gave the Saints a four-run cushion.
The 4-2 loss marked Marshall’s first time this season holding an opponent to single digits.
Devyn Welp allowed two earned runs with nine strikeouts on five hits and four walks over 4 2/3 innings in the win for St. Peter. Anderson tossed two scoreless, hitless innings of relief.
Marshall falls to 0-5 on the season with the loss and will look to bounce back on Thursday when it hosts Morris Area at 5 p.m.

GRANITE FALLS — A three-run fourth inning made all the difference for the Minneota/Canby softball team in the first game of its Camden Conference doubleheader against Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday. The Vikings claimed the lead there and relied on their pitching and defense for the remainder of the game to claim a 3-0 win.
Kiersyn Hulzebos and Joelle Otto started the third inning with consecutive singles before a sacrifice fly by Danni Kockelman drove in Hulzebos for the go-ahead run with two outs.
Emily Walker with an RBI single to drive in Otto, and Walker scored on an error to make the score 3-0 in favor of Minneota/Canby.
Madison Hennen secured the win with a complete-game shutout, limiting Canby to one hit and one walk while striking out 12 batters over seven innings.
Bayli Sneller pitched the complete game for YME, striking out 10 batters without a walk while allowing one earned run on three hits over six innings of work.
Brianna Nelson accounted for YME’s lone hit in the game.

GRANITE FALLS — The Minneota/Canby softball team’s offense grew stronger as the day progressed in its doubleheader against Yellow Medicine East on Tuesday. The Vikings closed out the second game of the day with a five-run sixth inning and a three-run seventh inning to earn a 10-0 Camden Conference win.
Minneota/Canby led 2-0 heading into the sixth inning when Kiersyn Hulzebos and Joelle Otto hit consecutive singles. After a strikeout put one away, Courtney Antony hit a two-run double to double the Viking advantage.
Danni Kockelman reached on an error to put runners on the corners when Emily Walker hit a two-run triple. Jayla Jerzak closed out the rally with an RBI ground out, making the score 7-0.
Otto threw all seven shutout innings for Minneota/Canby, allowing four hits and striking out three batters. Sneller went the full game for YME, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and a pair of walks with five strikeouts.
Antony doubled twice with three RBIs for Minneota while Otto had another double. Madison Hennen and Walker each also drove in a pair of runs.
Isabelle and Kiersyn Hulzebos reached base consecutively to start the seventh before Otto hit an RBI double. Hennen then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Hulzebos and Otto scored when Antony reached on an error.
Minneota/Canby scored the game’s first run on an RBI single by Hennen in the top of the first and doubled down with an RBI double from Antony in the fourth.
Minneota/Canby improves to 5-0 on the season and next hosts Russell-Tyler-Ruthton for its home opener on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
YME falls to 1-2 on the season and goes on the road to face Benson at 3 p.m.
TMB 16, Dawson-Boyd 3
DAWSON — A nine-run second inning led the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton softball team to a 16-3 mercy-rule win on the road over Dawson-Boyd Tuesday night.
The Panthers on 16 runs off eight hits with no errors, to the Blackjacks’ three runs, all of which came in the fourth inning, on four hits and two errors.
For TMB, Gretchen Lanoue pitched three innings and threw four strikeouts and four walks, while allowing three hits and three earned runs.
Cheyenne Hoffman started on the mound for the first 1 2/3 inning, and threw a pair of strikeouts along with three walks and one hit.
Offensively, Aliyah Loftness and Brianna Duscher shared a team-high two hits, while six different Panthers accounted for two runs on the night.
For Dawson-Boyd, Madeline Wente was on the mound for four innings, and threw four strikeouts and four walks, along with allowing five hits and five earned runs.
Batting-wise, Natyah Ritter led with two hits, while Elsie Wiebe, Shay Bothun and Quinn Larson had the three runs for the Blackjacks.
TMB got the action started promptly, starting the game with a 5-0 lead after the first inning, which quickly became 14-0 following its second-inning rally.
Helping the Panthers achieve a cushioned lead, TMB was aggressive in its base running throughout the night. Braelynn Kirk and Rosa Vang each had three stolen bases, while Kendra Tummerman and Melaina Ankrum each had another two. Allison Dolan, Avery Torgeson, Hoffman and Lanoue all had one stolen base.
Larson had two stolen bases for the Blackjacks.
Dawson-Boyd (1-2) will next look to get back in the win column when it travels to MACCRAY on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
TMB (3-0) will look for its fourth straight when it travels to face Minneota/Canby, also at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
A/E 10, RTR 5
ADRIAN — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton softball team couldn’t keep Adrian-Ellsworth off the scoreboard down the stretch in a Red Rock Conference softball game on Tuesday. The Dragons scored six unanswered runs in their final two innings at-bat to come from behind for a 10-5 win over the Knights.
RTR led 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth with no runners on and two outs. Yet, consecutive errors gave the Dragons the tying run before a strikeout ended the inning.
The Dragons claimed the lead with a five-run sixth inning, featuring four hits, a walk and an RTR error to go up 10-5.
With two outs in the seventh, Avery Schreurs and Laken Baartman singled consecutively and Paisley Thooft walked to load the bases, but a fielder’s choice left RTR’s rally short.
The Knights also loaded the bases with two outs in the sixth on singles to Thooft and Kynsi VanderPlaats and a walk to Daryssa Cruz, but a strikeout left them shy of a run.
After a scoreless first two innings, RTR scored first in the top of the third. Baartman, Thooft and Jaida Fricke singled consecutively to score the go-ahead run, a Cruz ground out drove in another, and VanderPlaats singled to make the score 3-0. After a strikeout, Payton Johansen doubled in VanderPlaats to give the Knights a four-run cushion.
An RBI single and a series of passed balls and wild pitches allowed Adrian/Ellsworth to tie the game with four runs of their own in the bottom of the frame. Yet, Baartman tripled before scoring on a Thooft fielder’s choice for a 5-4 RTR lead.
Fricke was charged with the loss for the Knights, allowing six earned and four unearned runs over six innings. She struck out five batters while giving up eight hits and a pair of walks.
Brekkyn Dreesen threw all seven innings for Adrian/Ellsworth, giving up five earned runs on 13 hits and three walks. She struck out nine batters.
RTR falls 2-4 on the season with the loss and aims to end its three-game skid on Thursday when it heads out on the road to take on Minneota/Canby at 4:30 p.m.
Wabasso 8, E/SWC 2
EDGERTON — In a game that saw three extra innings, the Wabasso softball team prevailed for an 8-2 win in 10 innings Tuesday night against Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian behind a dominant six-run final inning.
The Rabbits had eight runs off 10 hits with one error to E/SWC’s two runs off seven hits and three errors.
Aylah Jenniges pitched the entire 10 innings for Wabasso, throwing for 10 strikeouts and one walk in her 37 batters faced. She also accounted for two runs in her one hit on the night.
E/SWC’s Cathryn Feikema also pitched the entire night, throwing four strikeouts and four walks.
E/SWC first got on the board with two runs in the first inning, which the Rabbits were able to tie up with a pair of runs in the third inning. The game remained scoreless from there over the next seven innings.
Macy Rohlik, Kayleigha Johnson and Sara Carlson all shared a team-high two hits, while Rohlik also had two runs to pair with Jenniges.
Wabasso scored five of its six 10th-inning runs with two outs. The Rabbits continued to get runners on base behind aggressive hitting, including doubles from Peyton Jenniges, Alivia Olson and Carlson.
Wabasso was able to hold off E/SCW in its final at-bat to secure the win.
Wabaso moves to a 5-1 start on the season and will return to the diamond next on Monday when it hosts Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop at 5 p.m. on Monday.
