Tigers hit the ground running
Marshall boys win home opener, girls finish second

MARSHALL — The Marshall track and field team put together a strong showing at its home opener on Monday at the Southwest Minnesota State University track and field. The Tiger boys claimed a victory in the eight-team meet while the girls finished second to Luverne.
On the boys side, Marshall won in a landslide. The Tigers finished with 201 points, 61.5 ahead of runner-up Redwood Valley. Worthington took third with 108.5, followed by Luverne with 90 and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton with 55.
On the girls side, Marshall’s 161.5 points were second only to Luverne’s 171 and well ahead of third-place Redwood Valley’s 117.5. Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton and Tracy-Milroy-Balaton rounded out the top five with 74.5 and 57.5 points, respectively.
The Marshall boys had five individuals put together first-place finishes. Aidan Schuerman won the 110-meter hurdles and the 300-meter hurdles in 15.43 and 42.68, Alex Franson won the 400 meters in 51.77, Josh Liebfried won the 800 in 2:05.77, Brady Dubs won the pole vault with a height of 12-00 and Hamish Ahmed won the long jump with a distance of 19-09.
The Tigers also had runner-up performances from Jack Meier in the high jump, Kohen Holcomb in the 3200 meters and Sam Deutz in the 1600 meters. Marshall’s 4×400-meter and 4×800-meter relay teams also claimed first-place finishes.
On the girls side, Peyton Boeck won the 400 meters in 1:04.16 while Taleigha Bigler won the 800 in 2:26.45. Marshall also saw Brooklyn Purrington win the high jump at 5-00, Autumn Deutz win the pole vault at 10-06 and Paige Gillingham win the discus at 93-02.
Paige Gillingham’s sister, Brooke, was also the runner-up in the discus at 92-11 and placed third in the shot put, while Deutz and Boeck finished as runners-up in the long jump and triple jump, respectively.
Aidan Swenhaugen led TMB with a first-place finish in the 100-meter dash and a runner-up finish in the 200 meters. Teagan Viessman led the girls team with a 100-meter hurdles victory.
The Marshall track and field team will next compete at St. Peter on Monday at 4 p.m. while Tracy-Milroy-Balaton will return to the track on Tuesday, when it hosts an eight-team meet at 4 p.m.
